No GPS = no Navigation Menu Tab?
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:53:19 PM »
Hi,
I'm trying to revive a used 1197. The machine doesn't recognize any GPS unit that I connect and the Navigation Menu Tab is not visible. Is the loss of Navigation Menu an expected consequence of the missing GPS? The simulation shows all views, though. I have tested with the latest firmware (6.640) and with 6.600, no difference. For some reason the unit doesn't care if a transducer is connected or not, it always starts in Normal mode. All sonar features work well, and so does recording. But without GPS positions the unit is not very usable.

Added: I think I found the answer, my old 981 drops the navigation menu when the GPS is turned off. Now I have to figure out why the unit won't recognize a GPS.

Right Rickard, the units won’t show any menus or Views that are related to the accessory (in this case the GPS) if it does not detect the accessory as being connected.  Try connecting another GPS Receiver to the 1197 unit to see where the problem is (unit or GPS Receiver).

As for the unit always going into the Normal operating mode; that may be due to the “Demonstration” menu being turned off.

Thanks Greg, I'm afraid it's in the unit. I have tested with two GPS receivers and none of them works with the 1197, but both work with the 981. The "Demonstration menu" was on so it's something else that makes the unit ignore the status of the transducer. If I start the 1197 in Simulator mode I can replay recordings from the 981 and see the built-in map and position and all menu tabs. Unfortunately, this doesn't help when I restart in Normal mode.
The unit was donated(!) by a friend who had various issues with it, but I don't recall there were any problems with GPS. I suppose this has to do with hardware failures, but I will do my best and give the unit a second chance. Next thing will be connecting the GPS receiver to the wires inside the socket section of the unit, bypassing the female communication socket.
Then we have those magic procedures with bootstrapping and downgrading the software....
