Title: Need some help please

Ok guys I have had my unit it's a 1198 for almost a year now and have spent tons of hours on the unit. But I still can't seem to tell difference in crappie and other fish I guess what im asking is do I need to quit looking for crappie because I will never see them or will I see them sooner or later. All help would be appreciated and I have looked at everything on the Internet. Also there any way I can possible run a test to see how big a fish is on my unit?
