Need help understanding model numbers of the 998c SI
« on: December 23, 2012, 10:44:44 PM »
I am new to the forum so please be understanding... I'm confused because I want a model 998 that is HD with side imaging. Now I noticed a model 998c SI and a model 998c HD SI so I downloaded the HB manual for the 998c SI and it said it has HD for side imaging and down imaging. So 1) does it really and 2) if so then what does the 998c HD SI mean... there appears to be about 500.00 different between the two..  I'm looking for what I need to order to get a 998 that is HD and SI. Thanks

The  998c HD SI is the new model 998 that has just been released.  The only difference between it and the non hd version is that the new model has an LED backlit screen that has better sunlight visiblity than the older 998c SI model.

The reason for the big price different is that the 998c SI models are on a closeout sale because they are a discontinued model.

The price on the 998c SI is a VERY good price on the 998, especially from sellers like Universal Mania.  I would do some careful research before buying from the website which appears to be a Hummindbird factory Outlet.  There is an online Humminbird store, but it is not name factory outlet.

It will be a tough choice whether to save the $500 and go with the old model or go with the newer LED backlit model.  The sunlight visibiltiy of the old model 998 has been a common source of complaint about the 998.  The 898 has the same LED model upgrade also.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Hi, Cestes -

The ones listed as "HD" are newer; the only difference (other than cost and age) is the "HD" uses an LED screen, and the older model uses a CCFL, which some say is not as bright/readable in the sun.  All other components, features, etc. appear to be identical.  Hope that helps!

Thanks you so much... I just bought what I call my first "real" tournament boat. (Triton TR22) and I want to rig the electronics the best that I can afford. Up until now I've had an older boat with a HB 597ci HD DI.... now there are so many ideas from every dealer that i speak with that sponsors someone on a tournament trail... some say put your money on the bow some say put it on the helm... I think I'm overwhelmed... But thanks for the help...

Don't be overwhelmed.  People used to be quite successful catching fish with a bone hook and dried yak guts for a fishing line.

If you want to same bright display that you have with the 597ci HD DI than you need to pay the extra for the 998c HD Si Combo model.  Your 597ci HD DI has an LED backlight system in it.

…never tried yak guts but I will testify that fish will bite a bare hook!

Large screen could be better but sunlight will effect them all in some way or another...What ever you do it will cost.

You just said the fatal words "I just bought what I call my first "real" tournament boat".
From now on money is not an object. $500.00. Just 1 less rod and reel, right.
All kidding aside ( I know what your in for because I went down that street ), look
at it this way. If you were shopping a couple months ago when the HD model wasn't out,
you would have paid the same amount and not got the better unit.

Or you could step down to the 898c HD si and still pay the same amount as the non HD 998. Just an option.

Thanks again to all.... I think my options are going to be based on whether or not I try to sell my old boat before I buy my electronics or not.... If I were smart I'd wait until I sell my old boat and just buy an 11 series and a 9 series.... But I'm really wanting to get my new boat out on the water ready to go.... Thanks again....
