Title: My First Side Image ( 898 c2i ) is on Order
Post by: calli1 on March 26, 2010, 08:54:35 AM
Folks...Just a couple of questions for now...

1.  What will I like and gain having this unit outside of the Side Image?

2. Should I go ahead and start to read the owners manual online now?

3. What is the best Navionics card to purchase for this unit overall?

1. Not sure what you are asking here.  Do you mean that you may like the way the GPS works or something like that?

2. Yes, that’s always a good idea.

3. Where are you located?  Do you really think that you will use the 3D mapping or could you just get by with the 1 foot depth contours on the lakes you fish (that’s saying that these lakes are in the Navionic’s high definition format)?

Sorry that my first question is hard to understand...it is I guess.

I just can't wait til it gets here.  My first Side Image.  I have a 787c2i now.

I use a Navionics premium card now...2007 or 2008 model.

I will be using the side scan on Ky lake.  Does the Plat card have the one foot depth contours but has the HD.

So basically the difference in the premium vs the Plat card is the 3 D is on the plat with one foot contours and the prem.  just has the one foot contours?

Thanks

What will you gain aside from SI?

Well the first thing you will gain is the best customer service ( I am not connected with HB), they will make every effort to correct any issues.

You now have a knowledge base where there is a lot of folks here to help.  This forum has a lot of information and a bunch of folks that thrive on helping.

Beyond a great unit I'm not sure what you are asking.

You you start reading the owners manual?

By all means down load it and have it on you computer for reference.

You should familiarize yourself with your unit so that you can properly install it and get on the lake with confidence.

What SDHC card should you get to make recordings?

Everyone has their own idea as what is best.

I prefer Sandisk Extreme III 4 GB cards, you can get one from Amazon for $27.00 and you probably need a Multi Format Black USB Memory Card Reader Writer also available on Amazon for  $5.32

When you start out keep you recordings to 30 minutes after a while you will determine what is best for you.

What Navionics  card should you get?

Not to sure about your unit.  If you have a card use it first to see how it works out for you.  Navionics does tell us when they update each lake and your current card may be the latest for your lake.  Do not be to quick (as I have been) to throw money at it, you may be disappointed.  Your system maybe max'd out with the premium card, you can look on Navionics.com to determine if your unit can use the platinum chip.  From what I have viewed the platinum card really slows the system down and may not work with your unit.

I hope I answered your questions and if anyone disagrees please let us know and correct any mis statements.

Calli 1 .....

I use the Navionics Premium 2010 east....which covers my home lake...KY. Lake.....

If you don't think you will need the bells and whistles of 3d panarama and pics of marinas  (that probably don't even pertain to you)...the premium will do you just fine...

I have also heard that the Platinum card will slow down your unit...go with the Premium...

$149 at Cabelas....it's worth it....

Right: the Platinum is just the Premium card with some added bells and wistles that I have not heard that many fishermen really us after they get over the 'wow factor'.  The same 1 foot depth contour maps are on the Premium map card.

As was stated - not all Humminbird Si units can use the Platinum cards either (the 797 and 798 cannot) and some cannot handle the new 2010 cards well at all.  Its still to be seen of we can do anything to help the older 900 series units with this through a software update or not.

Thanks folks for all of the info.

If the Platinum slows down the unit, I don't want that at all.

I took will be using on ky lake.  My unit is the 898c2i.

The 3D would be nice but other than that, I don't know.

It seem that the temp read outs are having a problem on the 898.  Hope this is fixed by the time I get mine.  I use the temp on my electronics as much as anything.

Thanks again...I'm sure I will end up with lots more questions once the unit is mounted and running.

One other question on the Side Image..

The installation of the transom Transducer.....

I know nothing needs to be in the way of either side blocking the transducer.

I was told by a Humminbird Rep in a seminar that you need to mount your Transducer ABOVE the bottom line of the boat.  The reason given was that the side image works best at speeds of 2 to 6 mph...correct??

I also wonder how high off of the bottom line of the boat should I mount the unit....1, 2 , 3 inches??

The reason asking is that I fish part of the time on a stmp infested lake....

Also, was told to mount at least 15 inches from the motor/prop area...

Hope someone can ehlp.

Transom mounted transducer is indeed a hot topic here.  There are a lot of posts dealing with loss of signal at speeds above 15 mph.  loss of display with blockage, etc.   Browse the topics looking for words that match transducer or lossing si  etc.  Alwo if you can poost picture of your boats stern you will get some good information on location for starts.   If the size of the forum is overwhelming at first then just ask....    chuck

Just for clarification on speed vs. SI....optimum speed for SI images can be had with the right settings.....

I get great images down to 0.1mph ..but I generally fish (spider rigging for crappie) around 0.4mph......

I rarely set my chart speed above 1.....

I do most of my recordings around 2mph with the trolling motor.....(and I may pull crankbaits while I'm recording)..but I use the recordings mainly to capture a stretch of water (about 1 mile of water for a 30 minute recording)...then I take the recording home and view it on Humviewer and mark interesting spots with the GPS feature in Humviewer...then I load those waypoints back into my HB unit for the next time I fish that particular stretch of water...
