898 questions
« on: January 21, 2013, 01:19:58 AM »
hi all, great forum here with lots of info,i hope you can help me out with some answers,i am looking at importing an 898 from the US,i am aware that the unit will be in imperial measure and am thinking that the time??will be different to ours here in australia also, but what i need to know is will the unit work without a map card in it?(as i already have a garmin gps i only want to see what structure their is )also does it have an external or internal aerial and can i save points of interest to the unit (and or) an sd card while moving without a map in it??thanks rob

The other thing to remember is if you buy it in the US you will have to send it back there for warranty. I know it hurts to spend almost double the price here but there is a lot to be considered. Time zones you can alter. Definitely will work without a map card . An external GPS antenna and yes it saves waypoints and a whole bunch more.

thanks for that,it is alot to think about,j&h have them for approx 1/2 price compared to here and also can purchase 4 more years warranty for around $120,but like you said it will have to be sent back for any repairs???it would appear from looking on a few forums that the trouble seems to start after an upgrade from the internet,i think i would just use it without doing any downloading?what do you think enufzed?

I have never had a problem ever with a download (upgrade) but I usually wait until the guys on this forum give it the all clear. there is a wealth of info here and if you do have a problem with your unit there is usually plenty of good advice to rectify the situation. Wait and see what feedback you get to your questions here.

Breedy, if you do or when you decide to upgrade code then a couple of precautions. Make sure the download goes well.  Look at the file size coming down and look at the file that got stored. Make sure they are the same size..
Remove all sd cards from the unit.
Restore factory defaults.
Power on the unit and when it powers up insert the SD card with the lnew code.
Make sure the SD card has only the new code on it.
No back levels, no waypoints nothing else but the code..
Have a good current level of code stored on your computer..in case the upgrade does not go well.
Give it plenty  of time to perform the load to the unit.
Follow all unit screen prompts as required..

and if the upgrade doesent go well. there is possible to downgrade the unit to an earlier software wersion, and get the unit working again. at least we did that with a 1197 one of my friends have. :)

Hi Breedy

If you really need service, send your unit directly to the manufacturer. I've done a HB "Servcepartner" and I am waiting now more then 4 months on my unit !!!
