Ethernet Questions
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:00:13 PM »
Do I need software 5.271 installed to make this happen? I have version 5.210 currently and I do not have the network tab. When is 5.271 going to be available?

I have a 898c si and a 788ci Combo. Will the ethernet work in this combo?

survcat,
Where did you get the software version 5.271 from?  The latest software I saw released was version 5.320 (for the 1197c Si) and it did not have the Ethernet capability with it.  So any new software that does would be a higher version number than 5.320

I do not know when the Ethernet software will be available.

But only if that is a 788ci HD DI Combo or 788ci HD Combo unit will it have the Ethernet connection and will work when they get the software done.
If it is not an “HD” version 788ci unit you will have to use an InterLink connection.

Earl,
The software that turns the Ethernet on has not been released as yet.  When it is you can update the software in each of your units (these will be separate software update files) and it should work.

I logged on to he HB site and see that a new version for the 798 and 898 is available (version 5.410).
However, I can't find a description of what changes.
Anyone know if this is the ethernet support we have been waiting for?

Well, I answered my own question.   ;D

The 798 download had no desciption, but the 898 download says:

"Description:
3/4/2011 12:00:00 AM - v5.410 Ethernet capabilities"

I got mine hooked up today and it appears to work as advertised on the boat.
Pretty simple to setup and use.

It does not appear to work in Demo Mode????

Can you leave the Y-connector on, and still use the ethernet cable?

The software version 5.21 is the one that both my 1198 and 898 came with. I have been watching for updates for them, but current version is the same as what I already have.

Yes you can leave the Y-cable on and still use Ethernet.

Yes the 5.410 software is the software that turns the Ethernet on.

Any word on what to do if you run three sounders?

I haveone on the bow, the 1197 on the console and am thinking about a second for the console prely for mapping.

Thoughts?

DaveW,
I don’t know anything about future expandability with the Ethernet connection, so I don’t know if you will one day be able to connect three or more units to an Ethernet hub or anything like that.

No, not right now at least.  I don’t know what they are thinking about for future Ethernet functions and capabilities, but if this is something that you would like I would add it to the Wish List.  For now you can only use the sonar data from the second unit and transducer while ignoring the sonar from the transducer the unit is connected to – and not a combination of both.

I have a 2010 model 798ci (not the hd model).  I am looking to get an 898.  Is there some type of adapter for the 798 that I can I connect them with ethernet?

I didn't see anything in here that specifically called out this model.

Thanks!

No there is not and there won’t be anything in the future either.  Being able to use an Ethernet connection includes having the circuitry on the PCB as well as having the external connection and software.  This added circuitry (in fact a whole new PCB) was a part of the unseen changes from the older 798ci Si and 798c Si units to the newer 798ci HD Si units.

I have a 1197cxSI connected to a 788 HD DI.

Why do I not get the TRUE DI view option from the 788 on the 1197?

I’ll agree to: ok
(now, what did I just agree too?)

The DI sonar is not sharable through the Ethernet connection.  I know someone who said that they would look into this but my guess is the 1197 does not have the programming for the single element DI sonar or “TRUE DI” sonar as you call it.

Hi Greg,

True DI, or single element DI as you call it, has become as important to my fishing as SI was to conventional 200kHz sonar when it was first introduced.

More and more anglers around the world that fish in the 10 - 180ft range are realizing this every day.
