better base map for Canada?
« on: April 13, 2011, 12:08:19 PM »
Hey There

just wondering if anyone on the network here has heard anything about HB coming out with a better more detailed base map for the unit. With all the fancy handheld stuff out there it would be nice to see this software.

Thanks,

Tom

I bought the Navionics Canada Lake Maps chip at BassPro fpr $115.  Haven't had it out on the water yet but it does have a good list of Canadian lake charts.

Hey There

I do have the Navionics platinum chip for my graph and the details on the lakes it does have are really accurate from what I can see in my area. What I was referring to is the stock unit itself with no card in it. The base map has very little detail. It would be nice to use this unit to its full potential.

Base maps have little detail..and are very area specific.
We have to buy other maps for good detail

I have the same issue I can be on the Ontario side of the border and can see Falcon Lake in Manitoba but as soon as I get close to the provincial border the Manitoba map turns into bald prarie it's like the MB map is being intentionally hidden from use and no company makes a chip worth using navionics has Martin lake. Big deal you can spit across that pond

Yeah I have to agree. Most of the companies offering chips today are doing so with depth contoured lakes that have been surveyed for quite some time. While its nice to have a lake depth contour map it would also be nice to have a land based contour map. To my knowledge there is no map maker that offers this yet then?

My only guess is and  I am drawing straws here is that there may be a royalty issue for lakes.  Manitoba has 100,000 lakes, two of which are on par with lake Huron, in addition to world class river fishing.  We have many fishing tourists as well as residents that could use mapping, heck we even have our own commercial fishery on some lakes.  If it is a royalty issue it would be nice if one company would "man up" and make it possible.

For Canada, the base topo map (in the 1:50,000k scale) is free government data.
So Humminbird has no investments to do apart converting the data.

Ok, you don't have depth contours, but at least you have the lake contour for navigation.

And you can fit water/land topographic data for the Entire Canada into a 4Gb card.

As a shortcut for someone who really wants the contour of a lake, you can draw the lake contour in Google Earth and import it in HuminbirdPC in a track for use in your unit.
Not the best, but better than noting!

Interested in the google process as well.  Manitoba has nothing for maps, the only company that has detailed maps for Manitoba is Standard Horizon.  The unit is $600.00 with the card, and that's just a GPS unit.  Very detailed and lots of information, but that's alot of money.  Bob @ Pro-AM has the units.  Was there looking at them, but I think I will hold off for a bit.

Ok, for the google earth process, the first thing to know is if the photo from google lines up with real verified data. Since Google data can be offset. In that case, you are out of luck.

To determine the precision of the map, just use a stand-alone GPS unit or your humminbird, and drive around the block to make a tracklog. Import-it in Google and verify the precision.

Now, take the body of water that you want to map and use the function in Google Earth:
Add track "Ctrl-T" in the ADD drop down menu.
Now, you click the contour of the lake and save the data in KML/KMZ.

Using GPSBabel (or search the net for a KML/GPX converter) convert your data in a GPX file.
Next, import the file into HumminbirdPC to put into a sd card.
Putting the SD Card into your unit will automatically import the track into your 50 track memory. Just make sure to name it right inside HumminbirdPC to find it easily inside your unit.
At last, inside your unit, find the track and setup the line type and color you want to
have on your unit..

This setup will also work with depth contour once you have a map made by Dr.Depth.

Wow

I am just beginning to scratch the surface with my units capabilities. Is there a video some where or a tutorial to be found on how to use humminbird PC for these conversions that you speak of? It doesn't sound like an easy process.

The HumminbirdPC part is easy..

It's the google earth part that is a slow/long process to draw the entire lake contour.

The rest is just converting/importing data.
