Title: Hummingbird 899 ci HD SI and iPilot Link
Post by: Musky1969 on April 02, 2014, 07:34:42 PM
Hello ,
Rigging up a new 1775 Lund Impact in a week or so. I was talking with a guy and posed a question but came up with more so here is my plan:
Link the Terrova iPilot Link to the 899 on the dash via the Ethernet connection and mount the transducer in the back of the boat.  I believe I will still be able to use the contour function on the locator or at least that is what this guy said.  I would just have to set it up at the counsel and have the motor in the water.

In the future I will likely buy a 859 combo and Ethernet hook the whole system but for now I do not have a spare $600 to throw in.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

No suggestions.
Sounds like it will work as you planned.

You will need (if not know already) a Lakemaster chip current year or last year that allows follow the contour.  I used follow the contour for the first time on a week long trip and found it very easy to use.  Only problems I ran into were if we had the trolling motor cruise speed set really slow and wind picked up and pushed the boat as the trolling motor would run you back to the spot you should be and then take you along the path.  Also some areas we had s curves (you can see it on the map) at first we didn't like this but we were catching so many fish in these drops everyone about yelled at me when I was about to use Autopilot vs Follow the contour.  Made me laugh as the at first were complaining but when 28" Northern and 18 in bass are being reeled in at the same time and even the kids were catching 18 in northern you don't mess with success I guess.  ;-)

I have the 899 with the Terrova 80 Ipilot / link on a Crestliner 1850 sportfish SST boat is about 3000 lbs and even on Winnebago it does a great job of pulling the boat thru 2 foot walleye chop if that is of any help.  I called CS for MinnKota and they were spot on the recommendation for the TM.  Either way you go you will enjoy the rig, previous years up north my father would always move the boat and now the only time we worry about the motor is when a boat is in our path.  I think you will like the follow the contour hands free going around a like is really really fun and if your catching fish it is all that much better.
