Interference On 1198...Possible.
« on: April 10, 2013, 06:29:14 PM »
Ok folks...I have a 1198.  I have had for almost 2 years.  For some reason, I have just started having this interference showing up at different times on my screen.  My setting are...contrast is low, sensitivity is 14 or so other is about 8 to 10.  I know I have interference when I run my trolling motor.  Just any ideas?  Just thought I would ask.

This fixed my TM interference...

I doubt HB would send you 1 for a 2 year old unit...but you could call and ask..

It's still worth the $65 to install if you have to buy it...

I would guess the brushes in your TM are starting to wear and creating RF...

calli1,
Is this only when you run your trolling motor or all of the time?

I seems I just started getting this high contrast...grainy look.  And yes...I am getting interference when I hit power button on Trolling motor as well...been so since I had unit.  I am about to head out and put to Coke/Filters...that I purchased at Radio Shack today...one on the red wire of my trolling motor and red wire as close to the 1198 as I can get.  I also have a TMC 1 Choke on order from Jennifer today.  Kim that I deal with on the pro staff at Johnson Outdoors Inc. had Jennifer from there at Humminbird to call me today.  She has one on order and will be on backorder for 2 weeks.  I hope this helps.  Thanks

calli1,
The power cable you are using with your 1198c Si unit should already have a filter in it.  That is what the lump in the power cable is.  The TMC-1 will work to filter your trolling motor power.

If I am understanding what you have posted: this high contrast grainy look is not from the trolling motor.  So you have two different problems here.  See if you can cross test your unit on someone else’s boat and their unit on your boat (without the trolling motor running) to see if the problem follows the unit or stays with the transducer.

Greg...I added the Filter/Chokes I purchased last week at our local Radio Shack.  I have NO CLUE if it is what made the difference but my picture is clear today or was.  Now, as for the TMC-1.....do I put that where? I guess directions are coming with that.  Jennifer called me Thursday and said they are on back order.  No problem.  I might have questions later.  Thanks but overall...my unit works good.  I still play with all of my settings just about each time out.  What would you say is the best overall settings for the S I ?  I have been running the sensitivity at about 12 to 14 ....contrast between 9 and 11 and the Sharpness...off to low.  I also run my unit tracking speed at about 3 to 5 mph.

calli1,
There wasn't a lot of rain, wind/waves or something like an algae bloom when you were seeing the high contrast grainy look was there?

There are no best settings that will work in all locations or even in the same location on different days.  Plus what one person likes another does not.  Personally I’m a button pusher (hold over from my on-water testing days) so I don’t keep any one set of menu settings.  To troubleshoot this problem I would go back to the unit defaults though.
