Won't recognize accessories
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:40:33 AM »
My 797c SI stopped recognizing both my GPS and Cannonlink a few weeks ago. They were both working well for about a month after installing the Cannnonlink. We were headed out in some pretty choppy water and when I tried running them, no luck. I'm in a bit of a bind because our Coho season is beyond red hot and the transducer is still working so I'm still fishing.

I tried hooking the devices up directly, I even bought a new GPS puck but it still didn't recognize that. I'm on the latest software update (5.x) There are no other people I know that I can hook up my head unit to (I wouldn't want to risk any damage to someone else's devices anyway). Any other ideas on how to get it running these two devices? If I send it in, will they fix it for the flat fee or is that just a testing/diagnostic fee? Turnaround time? Also, is there any way to get the maps to come up without the GPS hooked up?

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

There is no way to have real-time maps without the gps working,
because the unit has to know where the boat is in order to determine
which map to display.

Have you thoroughly checked your power connections.
Fully charged and load tested your battery to be sure you have
a good power source?  If it is not, I'd wire the unit directly
to a battery (not through a fuse box), to get the best connection.
You can use a known good car battery to test it.

I'd unhook the cannonlink for now and see if you can get the
gps working.  I don't know if a malfunctioning cannonlink could prevent the
gps from working, but who knows.  Check the connectors on your gps wire.

If your unit is under warranty, it may not cost you anything
to get it fixed.  Call Humminbird customer service 1-800-633-1468.
If you do have to send the unit in, ask Humminbird to send you a
mailing label.  I think the repairs are just a flat fee.  I think turn-around
can be as quick as a few days to two weeks.  Call customer service and
they can tell you exactly what it would cost, how long it would take,
and may suggest other things for you to try.

Good Luck.

Brian,
It sounds like the problem may be in your 797c2 unit.  I would try the GPS Receiver by itself just to make sure it has nothing to do with the CannonLink.

Which new GPS Receiver did you buy to try with your 797c2 unit?  You should be able to test it with someone else’s Humminbird unit if it is a GR16 GPS Receiver.  If it is a GR50 GPS Receiver you should not use it on any of the older model units like your 797c2 unit as it may draw more current than the accessory power circuit within the unit can produce.  This would cause the problem that you are having.

Call the Humminbird folks at 1-800-633-1468 like ITG stated.  They can let you know the flat-rate service fee as well as expected repair times.  Keep in mind that your unit will be in shipping to and from the factory here in Alabama for more days than it will be here getting repaired.  If you pay for express shipping this would speed things up but at an added cost.

Tried the direct to battery and just GPS, still no accessories...me thinks it's fried. The "new" GPS is a GR16. I'll have to send it back as soon as I can.

Thanks for the help.

After trying a few things, I came to the realization that there was only one thing to do to fix the problem...I bought an 1198C SI. Problem solved, its awesome.
