Humminbird 987C software version 4.26
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:08:18 PM »
I just checked My Account on the Humminbird Web Site and version 4.26 is now showing for the 987c.  Does anyone know what the features of this upgrade are?

Thanks

Greg may be able to shed a little more light on the update, but here is the info from the Humminbird website.

987c SI Combo Update (version 4.260)

Description:
7/23/2009 12:00:00 AM - v4.260 Improves Unicode/English track names. Improves SD card R/W performance. Improves reading of Personalization data from SD card. Adds NST timezone. Fixes chart select. Fixes various cosmetic and minor operational defects.

Hope that helps,

Robert

Thanks Robert, I was hoping that maybe TVG on and off was included in this upgrade but guess not.  Still hoping that Humminbird will step up and offer version 4.510 for the 987 but looking more like it will never happen.

Thanks again,
Vance

The TVG feature will be renamed and called Switchfire in the "Fall/2010" software release we have heard so much about.  Weather or not it will happen for the 987c is not known.  Maybe Greg can shed a little light on future 987c software updates.

Good Luck,

Robert,
I asked someone about that yesterday and unfortunately I have no information to pass on.  I don’t know if or when this will be added so all we can do is wait for now.

Installed 4.260 on the 987.
Dutch language still could be better.

Bart en Ron of Baron have to do a better job.
Same goes for the 1197 with 4.570

Installed 4.260 yesterday. Worked flawless!
The "Geschwindigkeit" is still sticking out of the box, but I guess that`s an issue that will be addressed in a later version.

Oh sh$§ !!

Did you reset to factory defaults before you updated whiz?

Looks like the update got screwed up.

Had the same problem with my unit in January and had to send it back for a replacement.

But there's another way to get it fixed if you have the PC connection cable and Humminbird PC on your computer. You gotta start the unit in "BootStrap" mode.

"BootStrap" mode can be accessed by switching on the unit with the View button pressed;
then select the Program option from the screen menu and confirm by pressing the View button.
It is now possible to update again by HumminBird PC.

Good luck

At least I might get it going if i can without waiting for the factory.... Gezzzzzzz this techno stuff is way over my head.  I'll go to the humminbird sight to see if it's possible to down load humminbird pc.... Thanks for the info. Will keep you posted on my progress.  UPDATE!! OK  I just found the cable and software on line for about 20 dollars and comes with humminbird pc software. Going to order it and hope for the best....

You should be able to get it back by going through the bootstrap mode, but make sure you know what you are doing.

OK here is the latest from humminbird. The unit has to go back to them.... So i'll be side scanless for a couple of weeks....  I'm leaving for Hawaii saturday for 10 days . That will make the absence hurt less.... Lesson learned:" NEVER UPGRADE SOFTWARE WITHOUT RESETTING THE UNIT TO THE DEFAULT SETTINGS!!!!!!!!!"

Humminbird should design their updates to reset the settings to factory default prior to the update or at least save the settings onto the SD card.

From a programming standpoint it sometimes is a little more difficult than it may seem.  However, I think the idea is solid and certainly needs to be looked at with Humminbird.

I have flashed my units now quite a few times, and it always scares me.  I have had them lock up, go blank or even start to flash repeatedly, but have always seemed to get the update to take after a few minutes of fiddling with it.  Knock on wood!

I have repeatedly encountered errors or failed updates when trying to do the update on boot.  (IE. putting the SD card in and then powering on)  I have only got my 997c to update by powering the unit on first and getting past the startup screens, then inserting the SD card in the card slot.  The unit will recognise the new software update and then just follow the prompts like normal.

I think that most people also make the mistake of doing the update before the unit has booted.  If you put the card in before you turn it on, it will try to do the update while its booting, and this is when problems occur.
I thought this way is the prefered Way to do this, because the Unit recognizes this and stops booting to prevent the normal Operation processes on the unit from harming the update process ? ? ? ? ?

PeBe,

Since I am not the definitive source on Humminbird updates, I will recant my statement from being misinterpreted as the ONLY way to do the update.  But quite honestly, this is the only way I could get the updates to take on my unit the last few times and the Humminbird FAQ on Software Updates, actually says to power the unit on first.  This could be a misprint, but is the only way I have been able to get my unit to take the updates.  I have sent some emails out to Humminbird to check on this.

Robert

Quoted from Humminbird Website:

To update with an SD CARD

1. Log into your account at www.humminbird.com – My Account (Or register if you have not already done so under the Support section)

2. On the MY PROFILE page you will see your unit listed, the serial number and Available Updates, the unit update will be listed as the UNIT NAME UPDATE (version”123”)

3. Click on the UNIT NAME UPDATE to start the process.

4. You will then get the download box telling you what is included with the update. You will then click on Begin Download.

5. You will get a pop up window – You must then indicate that you want the file SAVED TO the SD CARD. (The SD card may be listed as a removable disk, removable storage drive, SD).Do not modify the name of the file, then click on SAVE.

6. After the Download Complete dialog box appears - click CLOSE

7. Remove SD Card from the card reader.

8. Power on your unit, then place the SD card in the unit.

9. You will get a message on the unit saying SOFTWARE NUMBER “123” is higher than your current “120” software do you want to update, Press Right Cursor to Confirm.

10. Another message will then appear saying do you want to ABORT, press Left Cursor to NO at this time and the software update will begin. DO NOT POWER OFF THE UNIT DURING THIS TIME.

Once the update is complete the unit will restart and say current SOFTWARE NUMBER “123” installed, no update required. It is now safe to remove the SD Card, and power off the unit.

Same like me, ;)
i dont want to say that my way was definitly the right way ! I dont know better, my Post was just what i thought.
So, because of your Quote from the HB Website, it seems that my thoughts are wrong !
I think i will take care about this by my next Update.

The only thing i can say is that the 798ci will do the Update during booting.
But this is not a wide Area users case study  ;D only my experience within less than 10 Firmwareupdates Newversion -> OldVersion->NewVersion->OldVersion and so on.

Pebe.

Before Robert pointed this out to me I could have sworn that the instructions stated to install the SD card with the new software before turning the unit on… shows what happens when I start swearing!  >:D  ;D

I sent a message to Engineering to find out if it should make a difference or what is the “official” way to do this.  I’ve usually installed the SD card prior to powering the unit on but have done it both ways with success.

Greg,

As you know I sent out a few emails to different people asking about this.  One interesting response was from Eddie Kendrick.

Quote
Robert,

I have never really done it one way all the time.

I like to power on the unit and then insert the card.

I think the really important thing to do is RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULTS “BEFORE” you install the software.

It doesn’t hurt to restore the defaults again after the install. I have seen an instance or 2 where the depth reading goes away after an software install. Restoring factory defaults gets everything back.

Regards,

Eddie

Like I said, I was just wondering if there was some merrit to putting the SD card in after the boot vs. before.

Thanks,

Robert
