Title: Helix 9 Mega Transducer Location
Post by: Oz306 on August 14, 2017, 08:32:06 PM
Hi everyone, I see there are numerous posts about similar topics to this. I have just upgraded from a 798 si to a Helix 9 Mega and am having some transducer placement issues.
When on plane the helix loses all depth readings or bounces from 1 ft to 100 ft. I am assuming this is caused by cavitation issues from the motor and or how the transducer is tracking through the water. Also the transducer creates a spray which isn't a good sign.

I have the transducer mounted on the port side which I know is a big no no and approx. 15 in from the edge of the motor. This is a little further away then the original 798 transducer was located. I have it on the port side because the boat is a tiller and have a transom mount Minn Kota on the starboard side and I assumed when it is deployed it would interfere with the transducer.
Where would you guys recommend the transducer be located? Move it up or down? The hull is angled at the back and the bottom of the transducer is just below to lowest point.

Attached are some pictures for reference.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Down toward the keel between the next 2 strakes would have cleaner water flow off the transom  ...

Distance to the side of the motor should only be concerned where the xducer housing creates cavitation directly in front of your lower unit water intakes  ... or too close to center that the lower unit hits the xducer housing when turning full lock to that side  ...
-----
Some high performance fiberglass glass owners opt for mounting the expensive imaging xducer higher on the transom for slow speed scanning  ... and also use a "shoot thru" 2d xducer epoxied in the hull for high speed readings  ...

This would require the MSIDB Y and an additional 2d xducer  ...

Thanks for the reply. I will try moving it down towards the centre of the transom more and see if that works. You may or may not be able to see in the pictures but the old screw holes from the previous transducer were closer but also right behind one of the hull strakes. I was trying to also avoid turbulence from those as well.

Will give this a shot on the weekend before looking into adding an additional transducer.
