Has anyone thought about putting together an Excel chart listing the various SD cards and the compatibility with each regarding the various HB units. Within the forum are various postings on SD cards but without a spreadsheet chart to bring all of it together. If this is done we can put the chart in Articles and Tutorials section. I can build the chart but it would required editing the many postings individually. Another thought on the chart is the validity and applicability of the information.
So, I would pose a challenge to anyone who might want to consider the challenge.
Another issue to consider is the availability of any referenced card. Some of the older working cards are, to say the least, hard to find..

OK, let me ask it this way. How do we know what sd card to buy for our units? Which work and which have had issues. Or do we just buy and see what happens..

That's an extremely great question Chuck.
It would be nice if Humminbird could put together such an SD chart.

I can't find any documentation stating this...but...
Greg has always mentioned HB recommends the Sandisk brand because Sandisk holds it's products in compliance with the SD Association standards....
He also made a post the other day that a HB engineer told him a Class 8 SD Card is plenty fast for anything the HB unit needs...

The size of the card is not all that important unless you are making a fairly long recording. For our purposes about 30 minutes is the longest. The difficulty as I see it today is that smaller cards (2 gb to 8 gb) are hard to find and that the larger cards and class can have some effect on the ability to record. As with any technology the upgrade and or replacements usually leave behind that which is know to work. Thereby leaving the user in the dark to know what the next step is to buy. Add that to the list of the now various types and definitions of a card (SD or SDHC or some such) confuses the buyer. ITGeek has said it would be nicer if HB could establish a chart for guidance, but I don't see that happening as it might create some manufacture uproar over selections or statements.
Which brings us to this forum. Here is the place to create these charts. We have over 9 thousand members now with quite a background of use and knowledge. Here (on this forum) is where this chart should be done and Robert has created the area of Articles and Tutorials to put such topic.
We have a great forum and ever expanding so that is why I suggested the building of a chart.
Lets see who can step up to this...

I bought a few 16 GB class 6 Samsung SD's thinking they are a memory leader...
Works OK in my 998 but my 899 will lock up @ the boot screen...
For as cheap as the are - not a big deal to me, but I have had good luck with G-Skilll cards.

In my 1197, I have successfully used Sandisk Extreme III, 16gb.
This is from my research a couple of years ago:
The 1197c SI can use all MMC, SD and SDHC cards.
SDHC cards have fixed sector sizes of 512 bytes.
The max SDHC card that can be used is 32 MB.
SDXC cards will not work.
I would guess that machines would save recordings faster, if the fastest possible cards are used. Also, to view the recordings on the HB units, a faster card would probably be better.
Once the recordings are copied/transferred to a PC hard drive (to view in various software), then the speed of the SD card doesn't matter anymore, because the viewing file size and speed would then depend on how much memory and power the PC has.
I have experienced large recordings bogging down an old laptop while using Humviewer.

Good points ITG. We use the pc viewers as the HB playback is slow and hard to move around within. And yes the large recordings are a bit bulky in a viewer also. This is one of the big reasons we try to keep recordings 30 min or less.
Thanks for the replies so far. good to know that folks are thinking about the SD cards and applicability.

That's 32GB ITG.... ;)
G-Skill is a world leader in PC memory and overclocking records - I would recommend a 32GB C10 card from them, I have used in each of my units with never an issue and flashed a lot of firmwares from the same 2-32GB card(s) I own.
I have G-Skill, Sandisk, Samsung, Team, and a bunch of Kingston cards.
They are all (except the tiny 32MB Sandisk) Class 4 or better and using benchmarking software - the larger higher class cards are slightly faster - the Team 8GB and 4 & 8GB Kingston are the dogs of the bunch - the Team is the slowest, even bested by the 4GB Kingston cards.
The 798ciSI, 899ciHDSI and 998cHDSI have had zero issue with the G-SKill cards flashing, snapshots or recording, made in Taiwan and LT WTTY.

Thanks guys. Looking good. I will see if we get any more replies and then will lock this topic in the articles and tutorials for faster reference in a lookup.

Sorry:
I meant 32GB, not 32MB.

What about Lexar Class 10 SD cards? Anyone have expirence with this brand?
I see the link that was posted for the Gskill is a micro SD is this what some of you guys are using? And why? Why not a regular SD card?

Chuck
I've been using SanDisk since I started and have had good results. Have not tried any other brands.
2010... 998 non HD.
SanDisk Ultra 15MB/s
SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s
2014... 1199
SanDisk Ultra 30MB/s
SanDisk Extreme 45MB/s

They are going away from regular SD Cards.
Even the newest HB units coming in about mid December or so will me mSD instead of full size.
A USB2 bus "floods out" at about 30MB/sec. max. ....FWIW
