Using The Two Transducer System with the 898 si
« on: February 27, 2011, 10:14:27 AM »
My first question is for a friend.  What is the transducer used when having a two system set up with the 2D ducer through the hull ?  He has a fiberglass boat.  Can he use the XNT-9-20-T  Ducer which brings me to my second question...

I am running a two system ducer on my 898.  My boat is a aluminum ...not glass.  I broke off the 2d ( XNT-9-20-T ) unit hitting something.  Rather than re-apply, can I simply sand off the paint on both the outsie and inside, clean surface in expoxy ducer ( XNT-9-20-T ) ducer to bottom of inside boat?

Thanks for your help....

Calli1,
For your first question: the transducer normally used is the XP-9-20.  The XNT-9-20-T can be used but he would have to provide his own epoxy (our buy our EPK epoxy kit).  If his XNT-9-20-T is unused he can trade it for the XP-9-20 transducer at Humminbird.  Call 1-800-633-1468 to set this up.

Installing an inside-the-hull transducer may or may not work on your aluminum boat.  Normally there is a lot of signal loss when attempting to shoot a sonar beam through aluminum but sometimes it will work.  I would clean the hull first and test to see if it will work on your boat by sealing a piece of PVC pipe to the boat hull, filling it with water and testing the transducer inside of that (see image below).  If it works than all is good and you can use it as is or cap the PVC pipe so that the water does not spill out or evaporate as fast.  If it does not work than you could look at possibly using an AlumaDucer (http://www.radarsonics.com/AlumaDucer.htm ).  I have heard where some have had good results with it and where some have not.
