500 dollars to replace a screen!!!!
« on: April 19, 2017, 03:23:32 PM »
I realize I don't not have a lot of posts here and this is a full on rant. I was out for my maiden voyage striper fishing in upstate new york for the season. I pulled the cover off my 1198c to hook everything up and dropped it. Picked it up sure enough the screen is cracked in several spots. This is not a new unit and I realize it is my fault for dropping it. I figured 150 dollars max to replace the screen. NOPE 495 flat fee and thats before I ship it to them on my dime and I am betting pay for return shipping. How do these companies sleep at night? I am NEVER buying another Humminbird product again. This is absolutely outrageous. Now my season is ruined. I pay 3000 dollars for this unit and this is how you get treated. I don't have the money to throw 600 dollars at fixing a screen. Sorry ladies and gents I am just beyond upset by this. Even if this is some special glass plus and hour labor and maybe nitrogen purging this is still unbelievable. Anyone that ever asks me about Humminbird products Im going to strongly advise them against purchase. Especially after selling my 360 imaging for like 400 dollars because its such a piece of junk that never worked. This company is raking in money on the backs of hard working people like me all while slinging second rate, buggy, expensive products. Then you call customer support and its 20 minutes before you talk to someone. How many years does it take before you hire extra help in the busy season????? All this and I feel no better at all.

Oh and my temp readout just randomly stop working so Im guessing my awesome SI transducer is on the fritz. So thats another 150. It reads temp sometimes and flashes and displays all kinds of crazy temps. There is only so much a person can take.

Well,
It is a discontinued model.
I don't think it would be any better at Lowrance.

Electronic equipment is expensive to repair today.  I repair appliances and it is not uncommon to have a $200.00 or $300.00 dollar circuit board to take out another $200.00 or $300.00 circuit board and have a $600.00 or $700.00 repair on a 5 or 6 year old Refrigerator.
Manufactures answer is of course the customer will spend the money, they paid $2000.00 Plus for the refrigerator.

I didn't realize the price of 1198 Ci has gone up in price.  I bought my 1198 C Si on April of 2013 for $2500.00 new.

3K is rounding up once you buy the unit, ship it, get all the odds and ends to connect it to everything like a 60 dollar ethernet cable, its not quite 3k but close enough for me. I have 5k in Humminbird items I wish I had never bought. Like I said I got rid of the 360 imaging it was so incredibly buggy. Didn't matter how good my voltage was with a load with out a load, if it was updated, nothing. It never worked properly once.

It seems to me that you were fine with Humminbird products until you dropped your 1198c.

It was an accident, and all of us have dropped and broken things, but it's not Humminbird's fault you dropped it.
The screen is probably one of the most expensive parts of the unit. That is a very big screen, and it no doubt has some sort of protective coating(s) on it. There's also probably soldering involved with replacing it.
So, $600 and you're back in business.

If you start from scratch with new units from say Lowrance or Garmin, how many thousands will you have to shell out to get started?

Watch the BBC electronics classifieds  ...

You may be able to find an entire setup for that price and then have extra parts for later  ...

Thanks guys for your replies, honestly I haven't been happy with my Humminbird units. I know this is not the place to talk like that. Between updates and bugs in everything I have used I will not be purchasing again. I know you guys all love your humminbird stuff and thats awesome. My next boat will have one garmin and a minn kota not linked to anything! It just gets to be too much. I spend more time trouble shooting why things aren't talking to each other than fishing it seems like.
