Flush Mounting Insert Thread Size
« on: June 27, 2012, 06:14:38 PM »
Can someone please tell me the thread size/pitch for the brass inserts that are moulded into the rear on the 1198 for flush mounting. I know it sounds strange but the Dealers where I live don't know and I can't seem to match the thread. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The quickest and easiest way is to carry the unit head to your local hardware store and have them help you fit the screw size.
It will probably be metric but dont know for sure..
The store will have many screws and you can find the right one very quickly.

Thanks Sonar, but I have already done that and can't find the correct size. 4mm starts but binds after a couple of turns. I went to a Bolt Supplier and they couldn't match it.

Thanks terry0540 but it doesn't appear to be 8/32. I believe it is M4.5, so can any Rep for Humminbird confirm or dismiss this, or better yet tell me the actual size.

ok.  trhe best way is to ask HB. I am a bit confused that a hardware store doesnt have a way to size the screw.

If you would have bought and used the IDMK-1100 accessory you would now that that #8-32 studs are used in those brass inserts… wait, did I just tell him that?  ;D

Is that an 8-32 for sure and not the metric 4.5?
I wonder why the hardware store could not fit him..

Chuck it is a #8-32 stud that is used in the hardware pack for the IDMK-1100.  This is the “bolt” that gets screwed into the brass insert according to the drawings I looked at.

My experience has been that if you want real help with something like this, that you are lucky to find someone at one of the big box type hardware stores that knows what they are talking about.  We still have a local old-school type hardware store where you can get real help with things and they are happy to help (without giving you an attitude!).

That is what I was talking about. the old mom and pop ever diminishing store in small town USA.
However in the big stores you could carry your unit in and match the screw at the big drawer section.
8-32 is a common thread..
But you have to help yourself as the store guys only knows televisions which they dont sell because it is a DYI  store.......

For the next batch on new Humminbird unit, you should think to print the screw size on the back of the unit.

I don’t think so Sil.  Adding something like this would cost several thousands of dollars if not in the tens of thousands.  Plus, the intention is for someone to purchase the indash mounting kit that would have the correct studs in the kit.

I agree with Sil, on the documentation give the thread size. Does not have to be on the unit but at least on the paperwork..

Lets not soak the user for every nickel, dime and screw..

Thanks Greg. As some have mentioned service is an issue. I went back to the Bolt Supplier who I had asked previously to check if it was 8/32 UNC and this time spoke to a different guy. He came back with 4x 8/32 UNC screws that fitted perfectly - as Greg would expect. I politely chastised him about the other guy and his reply was "God knows what he was doing!". Short of jumping the counter and checking for yourself or having a huge selection of all known nuts and bolts at your disposal what are you supposed to do! As for purchasing the IDMK-1100 accessory, all I want to do is attach a custom made Sunshade to the Unit to give better weather protection and screen visibility, I do not want to Flush Mount it. For me to buy the accessory where I live is $55 (AUS) verse $2 (AUS) for four screws. And even if I bought it I would still have to cut the mounting studs - ugly! and discard the rest. Anyway, thanks for all the help, it was much appreciated.

Chuck,
We are not going to start documenting the size and type of every screw that is used or could be used on our units.  The intention is that the user would buy the appropriate accessory that is designed for the unit.  In Belltowerbrett’s case he did not need the IDMK kit.  That is why we do supply this information upon request and it is not requested very often.

Still think it would be nice to reference this on the diagram. Would be helpful to folks like BellTower who want to mount.
Seems it would take some workload off customer support if the user had it..
