Title: Cobra VHF DSC (in)compatibility with HB 797
Post by: akgoff4 on May 21, 2011, 12:37:28 PM
I have rewired my my 797, bought a gps connector for my Cobra MRF-55 VHF radio so that the HB can send it my GPS coordinates and I can send them to Coast Guard if I ever have to press the DSC distress button.

I have the NMEA pigtail wired in to that connector with the third / red wire wrapped up. I have NMEA output set to "on." However, no gps coordinates on the Cobra screen.   &%$#!

I recall seeing something on here that said that the "strings" that output from the HB are atypical.  I am just out of luck on this one?

I believe that I have heard of others that have successfully connected to the Cobra 55 VHF radio but than my memory does play tricks on me…
Best thing to do is have someone else with a unit that will fit on your 797c2 Si’s mount, test their unit and see if the NMEA connects or not.  It would be best if they are using the NMEA output on their boat so that you know that they have a good NMEA output from their unit.
