Title: Plotting shoreline from google and how to add islands?
Post by: MT-ED on May 16, 2015, 12:07:17 PM
I am plotting the shoreline on a lake, per AC instructions. It appears that I am forming a multifaceted  closed polygon. I have not been able to find what I need to do to include islands, within, the initial polygon.

If anyone can direct me, describe the process, or offer any other help of how to do this, I'd be forever grateful!

I "think" I may have found a solution. After "plotting" the shore line, I went to the closest "point" on shore, next to the island. I then stuck a new point on the island. The plotting process is similar to imagining a large rubber band, and each point is a pin, that "stretches" the rubber band, to form a polygon. I was able to form a polygon around each island, and "scooch" two points on the island, with two points on the shore, so it "appears" a single line connects the shore with the island. It makes sense, because you are plotting the water level, so the connecting line "should" disappear, as it is at the same level as the shoreline on both the island and main land.

OK, I screwed up because I wasn't careful when "surrounding" islands with the rubber band lines, and the lines got crossed, so when you specify which side is land and which is water, some of the islands became land, and others, water!! The next problem I got was that the software does NOT recognize the "connection" lines as "normal" and it will not calculate and plot the proper depths where the lines are. I'll be calling HB on Mon. to see what they say is the solution for islands.
