Title: HB 598ci HD SI Help needed!!!!!!!
Post by: Nru77250 on February 19, 2013, 02:39:23 PM
So I have bought and installed a Hb 598ci HDSI on my Champion. But as luck would have it, it's not working properly. The 2D, DI, GPS, and everything else is working good. On the side imaging screen, I am seeing 2 lines perpendicular in the left water column. In the image 75ft left and right, the bottom, im also seeing lines throughout. I even went by some brush that was sticking out of the water and all I could see was the shadow of it, no detail what so ever. When mounting the transducer, I did my homework and mounted it below and to the right of the motor mount. The right/left view is not blocked by anything. Does anyone have a clue on what could be wrong here?

If I were you I would double check just to make sure theres nothing blocking that side. I went through the same thing and I didn't realize when I installed it that my rudder was going to block the beam.  the rudder was turned all the way to one side when I installed.  I had to get another transducer so I could put one on each side of stern of my boat.  Post pictures of you install for us to see.  If you don't have anything blocking it, it could be a bad transducer or even a bad unit.  Give humminbird a call and tell them whats going on.  But post pics first so we can see if we can see a problem.

Thanks for the feedback, I have emailed HB and haven't got a response yet. I'll plan on making a call to them. Also, when I get home tonight I'll post a photo of the ducer mount. Does the sonar shoot directly out L and R? Or is it back and then out?

Could you post some picts of what you are seeing.  If you could take some screenshots that would help alot.

The Si sonar shoots out of the sides of the transducer but it also shoots upwards a little as well.  Post some pics of your transducer mount as it sounds like you are seeing a reflection of the Left Si sonar.  You should be seeing this in the Di sonar as well.  Set the Si Range to 10 or 20 feet and see if there are some lines just to the left of the centerline that run parallel to the centerline.  Make sure that they show up whether the boat is moving or not.  Also check to see if they appear with the motor raised or not.

I am still having troubles with my new unit!!!!! It still isnt marking brush i know is there. I have been working with humminbird customer service, but it doesnt seem like they know whats going on. They sent me a new transducer and it didnt fix my issue. Next step is to send both the transducer and unit to HB.....I finally took some photo's, let me know what you all think??????

okay, I see whats going on.  You are moving very very slow. You should be traveling between 2 to 5 miles per hour to get a good side scan image and have your scroll setting set to between 3 and 5. The vertical lines are because you're seeing the same image continuously and the screen is scrolling faster than you are moving.

Those vertical lines are your structure!  The image is just getting stretched because you are moving s slow.

Also, your transducer is in a spot that may give you issues at higher speeds.  The turbulence coming off the step will cause distortion with the si images and you may lose bottom reading with 2d all together.

Hope that helps.

So if i reduced the chart speed to 1, would that help clear up the image at slower speeds? When bass fishing, im rarely moving any fast than 1-2mph. However, 3-5mph would make sense when pre-scanning an area.

Yes, It would certainly help.  What was it set to when you did this scan?

Most of my fishing (and scanning) is done at < 1mph...I keep my chart on 1 respectively and I get very satisfactory results...

This shot was at about 0.4mph while slow trolling for crappie...

Rickie,

Great example. My boat just doesnt go that slow!  With a 225, i am always moving 2 to 3 mph in idle!

But yes, chart speed to 1 when moving that slow will produce fantastic images!

I'm afraid a 225 would pull the wrinkles outa my face...:)

Of course I'm just fishing on a small 180,000 acre KY lake....

That big blue Atlantic pond you fish (and scuba) in is just a little bigger (by a few million square miles)...haha
