Dedicated battery for units
« on: March 18, 2018, 11:10:47 AM »
Does anyone have 1 dedicated battery for there units. I am running a helix 9 and a onix 10 and am thinking of moving them of my house/crank batteries to its own. How do you have your battery chargers hooked up. Thanks for any insight.

Two for the T/M, one for the boat and electronics. I am running two HB units a Helix G2N MEGA SI on the bow, a 899 si on the console all the time. Have not had a problem yet. Batteries are Delco voyager. I also have a Min Kota on-board charger that I plug in as soon as I get the boat home and it stays plugged in.

2 batteries for TM  ... Connected to a 2 bank XPS on board charger  ...
1 battery for starting  ... Shares 2nd 2 bank XPS on board charger with electronics battery  ...
1 battery for electronics  ... Shares 2nd 2 bank XPS on board charger with starting battery  ...

There are reported scenarios where RFI interference can back-feed from the TM - thru a common on board charger - and into electronics  ...

Plus 2 separate on board chargers allows having charging capabilities (with some wire swapping) if 1 charger dies and needs replacing  ...

I run 3 batteries in my boat with a 3 bank Cabelas  battery charging unit...1 group 31 battery for my engine crank battery,  another  group 31 battery for all the other boat stuff/ bilge/ 12 volt trolling motor  and live well pumps etc, and the 3rd group 27 battery for my sonar electronics. I troll with a 4 stroke kicker engine. You never want your live well pump running off the engine crank battery because you will get a big dead battery  surprise when you run the live-well pump all day and find your crank battery is dead.  I have a PERKO battery switch so if for some reason  I do run down the main  engine crank battery I can switch to  the 2nd battery as a crank battery.  I rarely fish for more than 8 hours a day as I have never even come close to running these batteries down because I have a 5 bank switchable console mounted battery check meter I can check charge status of any of the 3 batteries at any time.  Some guys run 4 batteries if they have a 24 volt trolling  motor. When I quit fishing I just plug in the 3 bank  charger and  it does its thing for all 3 batteries at a computer controlled  20 amps   with a maintainer  trickle charge.  Nice unit too, best $159.00 I ever spent as I'm ready to go the next morning.

Boat is in pole barn and the pics won't tell you anymore than what I have told you already...it's a pretty simple wiring set up. Maybe Rickie has pics of his set up as it is the same as mine except he has a 2-12 volt batteries for his 24 volt trolling motor batteries and a 2 bank charger.
