898 freezing up...
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:02:05 PM »
Well i got my 898 all re-wired and now i have consistant voltage readouts... but i got playing with it after I finished up and everytime i hit the "mark" button the unit would freeze up and i would have to reboot it... i checked every setting i could find and couldn't figure it out... Last summer i had no problems marking waypoints with it... I just updated to 6.180 (with the proper file name) and am wondering if this could have caused it... Also my gps says its connected.... Any help on this would be great....

Thanks

James Patterson

James,
Is this with your boat out in the open so that the GPS Receiver can track the satellites?

Try exporting all of your Nav Data and save it to your computer through HumminbirdPC.  Than go back in and Delete all of the Nav Data on your 898 unit and try using the MARK button again.  We have seen some corrupt waypoint data cause some strange things with the 6.180 software.

Hi,
I too had some "button Issues" w/ my HB (mine is a 998c) when I went to 6.180. My problem was that my unit would "reboot" if I hit either "View" or "Exit" buttons too fast. I backed out to 5.700 and then reloaded 6.180 (to see if I had a solid problem) and my "problem" went away.

Not cool, but that's what I saw.

Take care,
Roger

I guess you could say fairly open, i went into the system status and there were a whole bunch of satellites showing... i deleted all the waypoints on the unit and tried it again and it still froze up... I seem to remember that i had my SD card locked last year and it would read "no writeable MMC/SD card" or something but would still save them to the unit itself... now Ifigured out that my card was locked all last year... now there is a new Navionics card unlocked in the slot... the unit still makes noise and i can still power it off (the power down sequence doesn't show up) but the screen freezes and i cant open any menus etc...  :-\

Take all of the SD (map and memory) cards out of the unit Patty and see if it happens again.
If the unit is showing your position on the map than it is getting enough of a signal from the satellites to check this out.

okay, I pulled the card and hit mark... intantly created a waypoint got the no writeable card thing but it worked and didn't freeze... so my next question is that if i lock the SD card i should be okay with saving them to the unit? why won't it let me save them to the card? I put the card in and hit mark again instantly freezes up... should i try a blank card? can i select which card it saves waypoints to?(can you tell how technologically advanced I am? :P)

Okay, i formatted a card and put it in, fired up the unit and hit mark and it froze right away... shut it down pulled the card fired it back up hit mark and it created a waypoint right away, put the blank card in hit mark again and it created a way point... locked my navionics card and put it back in and hit mark and it froze right away... I'm getting frustrated and confused... seems to be my navionics card?

Patty,
It sounds like you have the Screen Snapshot menu set to “On”.  If you do then when you mark a waypoint, the unit also tries to save a *.png picture file of what is on the display of your unit to the SD memory card.  If you do not have a memory card installed in the unit then it should give you the “no writable memory card” message but it will still save the waypoint coordinates to the internal memory of the unit.  The same thing will happen if you have a memory card that is installed but is locked.  The waypoint coordinates and picture are two separate items here.

I don’t know that it is your Navionics card here Patty.  Try testing it again but this time without the Navionics card being locked and see what happens.  You tried a formatted SD memory card twice and it locked up the first time but not the second… that is strange.  What brand and size memory card are you using?  Try using a SanDisk brand memory card and see if you get better results.

Huh, what do ya know!!! turned off screen snapshot (i don't even remember turning it on) and was good to go!!! Thank you kindly!!!so i have another question,  does the unit automatically save waypoints to the cards or do i have to manually do that?

You have to manually export waypoints to the card from the unit.  I do this at the end of the day fishing at the launch ramp.  I save my track for the day and then go into the waypoint manager area and select "select all and export".  That exports all of my waypoints and tracks to the card.

Is there a reason why my unit would freeze up trying to take a screen snapshot? it works fine with it off and with everything but the navionics card installed locked or unlocked... could it simply be the navionics card not being fast enough? i still have one blank card and the navionics card in the unit and am just wondering if there is a way to select which card it would save the snapshot to? the navionics is a 8gb micro SD in what i call an adapter card and the other blank card is a SD 256mb ( i formatted an old navionics card). I guess its not a big deal but i may end up finding something i want to take a picture of someday!!!

The unit should always save the Screen Snapshots to the SD memory card and not the mapping card.
Are you saying that this only happens when the mapping card is installed but it works okay without the mapping card installed?

It would be nice to be able to select the card you want to write to.
Several other units have this feature. (non-HB)

We are seeing posts about nav cards installed and not saving snapshots.

Yes, now it works fine so long as i don't have my mapping card in the unit, but as soon as i have it in locked or unlocked it freezes up as soon as i hit mark with screen snapshot enabled... everything works good so long as screen snapshot is set to off....

If you take out the nav card will it write to a blank sd card?

Patty, I have heard of this before and the fix was a new mapping card.  Now I don’t know if this is the fix for your issue or not but it may be worth looking into.

Yeah, just what we need Chuck: fishermen writing data to their mapping cards and wiping out the mapping data!  It is much safer to have the units write data to a non-mapping card to help protect the fishermen’s mapping card investment and to keep any user related incidents from messing up their mapping cards.

If I am understanding it should not write to a map card. But it seems to get confused about which is map and which is ok to write.

Why not just select the slot for write and the unit wont even try to write to a map.
Most maps are protected anyway.

The mapping card is only two months old... it wasn't cheap and to have to replace it would really suck!!! i have noticed that i can select which card to read the chart from and have selected it in my settings but nothing as for the blank card....

I dont think it is the mapping card so much as it might be the code in the unit not being able to always know what is in a slot or managing the slot.

The card slots are nothing more than a read/write bus like on a computer.
Similar to a USB port.

Dont see this problem on our other sonar units..

Now dont get me wrong, HB has a good sonar unit that has a place in our tool box. It just isn't a replace all others product..It has its ups and downs.  There are things I dont like about other units also..

Patty, I dont know but suspicion code issues..
Or maybe card seating in the slots.
There are issues with both..

Patty,
If I am correct in my suspicion of the map card having corrupt data than locking it does not keep the unit (or any other device) from reading the information it contains.  The lock only keeps a device from writing to the map card.  Only way to know if it is the map card is to try another map card of the same make, model and year as the one you have and see if you have the same problem or not.

I did not think we had corrupt data on map cards.  Only corrupt data when trying to waypoint from HB pc to a unit.. or a copy from another file to an sd..

So do we now have to consider a corrupt map card issue?

From the factory it may not be corrupted, but updating it could cause problems.
That is what I was trying to find out if the factory was shipping a corrupt card.

Now that would be unusual.

I can see updates possibly corrupting..but also highly unlikely..

Weird problem..

It is a weird problem.
I am just postulating the corrupt map card as one possibility.  New or updated this is after all just a flash memory device.  Although there may be many individuals here on this web site that have never experienced a problem with a flash memory device corrupting the data (i.e. “failing”): it can and does happen.  Have we ever encountered a Customer that bought a new mapping card that did not work?  Yes.  Add to that the fact that the map card in question is no longer “new” as it has been updated and the possibility that it has a problem that is causing this issue increases.  Does that make it the reason this happens?  I don’t know, that is why I stated to try another mapping card of the same make and year.  Of course now it has to be one with the same update as Patty made to his memory card.

Just as possible could be that somehow the 6.180 software update got corrupted.  After all it is a downloaded file that was placed on an SD memory card…

I will go back and ask.
Why for these two particular instances.
We use flash card daily without error. Data copied (on a system) and data transfered (via networks)
Not seeing problems here.
HB sonar recordings. we have never seen a corrupted file on the HB write to sd. We have never had a problem in copying the sd to a pc.
We have never had a problem  sending or receiving sonar recorded data.

Are we just that lucky..

Yes.
The incidence of failure may be very low but it does exist.
Also add to that the fact that sonar recordings are going from a sonar unit to the SD card and from the SD card to a computer – the internet and its communication issues was not involved.  There was another post where someone could not even fully download a file and the issue seemed to be due to their internet connection.

Like I said: it is a just a possibility but a possibility non-the-less.

Okay just got back in and... no luck using screen snapshot with navionics in, worked fine with it out, also was able to save waypoints with the screensnapshot disabled with the navionics card in... I'm at a loss... seems to me it has to be the card i think its safe to say the unit can be ruled out... Not too sure where to go from here, don't really know anyone with the same card as me to try... I have the navioncs pc app so it has all the charts on my computer but i'm not sure about transfering the files to a new card and trying that...
I am not a computer tech, so I am reluctant to try formating the navionics card and replacing all the files on it, it would be $250+ to replace it if it didn't work.... Thank you guys for all your help its greatly appreciated, and hopefully you can lend a few more opinions on this because i'm out of ideas..... :-\

Give Navionics a call and I'm sure that they will walk you through it.  They may just exchange it seeing as it is only 2 months old.  It sucks to get something new and it don't work right. >:(

I sent navionics a email last night explaining my problem... Hopefully they will provide some insight into whats going on...

The one tthing i never tried last night on the water was recording... I think maybe i should have to see if there was a problem there as well... I'll check it out tonight in the yard and let you all know....

so i tried once again last night... recording worked fine both with snapshot on and off... still an issue with the mark button tho... so what i did was, copied all the files off my navionics card to my desktop and then copied them to another card (hopefully i didn't infringe on anything :-\) and tried that and still no luck... I figured it was worth a try... Hopefully navionics gets back to me soon maybe they will replace the card, i may just have to live with not being able to take snapshots... i'm going to download 5.7 and try that as well maybe... it was never installed on my unit and honestly couldn't tell you what i started with, 6.180 was the first update i did...

Yes 1 map card one blank card... I kinda made it work tonight... If it says "loading charts" when i hit mark it locks up... if it says "no chart" it works fine.... problem being why won't it load my chart? i'm really confused now... i might have to shell out another 250 for a new card to try... doesn't seem to want to load it in either slot and i also tried two different adapter cards.... hopefully navionics has some info on it for me tommorow....

Definately see what Navionics has to say. It seems you are ok without that card.
If their card is bad then two things.
1) they should replace..
2) if they say you corrupted their card then they should prevent writing to their card.

Let us know the conversation.

well i heard back from navionics today, they say they have never heard of this problem... They are willing to take the card back and checking it out, but said that they wouldn't be able to test its functionality with my unit... so.... Not sure what i'm going to do now... The only other fish finder i can try it in is a 597 (i think) on my father in laws boat but its still in storage so i wouldn't be able to get a gps fix.... i also asked if they could send me a list of the files that are supposed to be on it just in case its something missing...

Patty, I heard of other programs that interface with google earth and other maps. You have to have a pc and do some techie stuff but can get maps for your unit.
A lot of work though.
Hopefully you can get a new card right back.
The map issues combined with waypointing and other navigatiion issues is why we dont use the HB nav but have another brand just for nav.

You might find an inexpensive handheld GPS to use until you can get your HB and nav fixed..

It's great to hear that you got it all worked out and working. ;D  Was it Navionics that suggested to do the update again?

Well actually i had heard a few bad things about crashes while downloading updates, although i didn't think mine had crashed i re-updated it anyway... Navionics agreed with zooming right out to you can see all of north America and then putting in the card... It loaded in under ten seconds, and even after i powered down and had the unit zoomed in it didn't have any problems at all no freezing hesitation etc.... With fishing season a week away today I am Very happy to have it figured out....
