998 HDSI side imaging shallow water
« on: September 10, 2014, 12:14:55 AM »
This is my first post after purchasing the 998 HDSI . Like many others reading the forums prior to purchase convinced me to go the Humminbird SI way as against the  alternatives . Still have so much to learn but enjoying the purchase and looking forward to approaching summer in NZ. The query I have is side image coverage in shallow water say around 6-8 feet. There are several posts and videos (ie Bob Jensen/Eddie Kendrick) that state you can see into distant weed and reed lines and others that say distance is restricted by depth. Has anyone advice on settings etc to if possible stretch my coverage out in shallow calm harbour flat areas. From the manual diagram showing comparison between 455Khz and 800Khz there appears no reason that 455 shouldn't record somewhere between 100 and the 240ft maximum although the diagrams are possibly not to a comparative scale. I am very happy with my purchase and the relevant readings in 20ft plus depth covered to date however am interested in the technicalities involved in that shallow water. Haven't tried as yet but if using say just one side could the transducer be tilted sideways to extend distance -I guess the problem then would be spotting fish as no visible shadow.
Many thanks - Peter

HB shallow water discussion...

http://www.bbcboards.net/humminbird-image-interpretation/172536-humminbird-si-screen-captures-0-10-a.html

The issue in SI Range is not how far will it reach...but how small those echoes become as the SI Range is increased...

The farther the SI range...the more information has to be squashed to get it into the SI image...making everything in the image smaller...

Enviromental conditions, fish echo size, bottom composition, smaller echoes from farther SI Range settings...all play a part in being able to discern fish echoes from the rest of the echoes in the SI image...

Sometimes the variables (as mentioned above) allow the fish echoes to pop out on the SI image....

Sometimes the variables (as mentioned above) make it very difficult to pick out the fish echoes...

Using ONE side beam can help offset this quite a bit - but Ricky is spot on, as he usually is.....

Thanks for the replies & for the site specifically showing images in the 0-10 ft range . Certainly have some experimenting to do . Never thought anything could distract one from fishing . Thanks again
