Hi everybody,
It's been very interesting to read about you side scan projects!
I'd like to build my own side scan set for scanning the bottom of river beds for interesting stuff.
What would you recommend for a beginner that does not want to spend thousands of dollars (euro's actually ;)) but does want a reasonable identifiable image?
Do you have any DIY instructions, books, links other recommendations?
Perhaps just a part list?

Basically all of us have purchased commercial units from Humminbird, they were the first to push affordable side scanning units for the everyday boater. It really gives us a lot of pictorial information on what is underwater including showing fish.
Now some of the folks on this site have built tow fish to take the transducer down to lower depths, also the units are used by emergency teams to locate sunken boats and unfortunately victims that have drown.
There are many different systems available, you may want to look locally to get a metric model , they are more expensive but are probably more beneficial for where you live. I am sure that a few folks will give you the positives and negatives on some purchases.
