Title: Can this thru hull transducer work with a Humminbird
Post by: hgv on January 29, 2013, 11:01:13 AM
Here is the exact unit .................

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOWRANCE-THRU-HULL-WIDE-ANGLE-TRANSDUCER-19-000-0090-75-TH-FWBK-MARINE-BOAT-/230823222559 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOWRANCE-THRU-HULL-WIDE-ANGLE-TRANSDUCER-19-000-0090-75-TH-FWBK-MARINE-BOAT-/230823222559)

Need to know if this unit can be used with the 798 Humminbird via a Y cable

It says 'Lowrance' on that transducer.
I'd be extremely cautious about trying to mix
sonar brands.
People have done it here successfully, but it required some
re-wiring and knowledge.
You could ruin both the transducer and your unit if
things go badly.

I would play it safe and get a transducer that is
actually designed to work with your unit.

Since I already have a Lowarnce thru hull setup then I believe I will try to remove that setup and put back in its place a XFM-9-20, since the hole is already there.

Any advise or warnings? If I cannot seem to easly break it loose then I will leave it an use the XP-9-20 (in hull transducer)

You may want a professional to install a thru-hull transducer,
since, if something goes wrong, your boat may sink.
I guess the main thing is getting the hole drilled straight, and at the
proper angle.

They will probably use 5200 marine sealer on it, since it's
for below the water line sealing.

If it already has that sealer on it, it will be very difficult to remove,
but not impossible.  You could use a razor blade to cut the adhesive,
and a long nosed vise grip to grip and pull it off in pieces.
I've used that stuff on my boat for 10 years, and it's great.
I never look forward to removing something that was secured
with it, but so far, I have managed to remove everything
I wanted to.
The stuff gets dirty with age, but will last forever, especially
if you paint over it.
It's very messy to work with.

It would be nice if you could get some kind of adapter to use
the lowrance transducer with your Humminbird.

Maybe someone else knows the best way for you to proceed.

So the existing hole, if I get the old transducer out is 1 3/4" where the Humminbird device I would be using requires a 2" hole.

Any ideas on how to accurately expand the hole to 2"?

As ITGeek pointed out this may be best for a professional to enlarge the hole.  If it is not right it may leak.  Or take a lot of sealing goop..
