Title: Depth jumping to 560 meters
Post by: zeebeest on September 25, 2020, 01:50:25 PM
good evening,
I have a problem with my Helix.
At a depth of 5 meters, the depth constantly jumped between 5 and 560 meters.
To solve the problem I updated the unit but after this the unit no longer indicates depth at all.
Every now and then I still see 500 meters or more on the screen while it is no deeper than 5 meters.
All settings already changed but no result.
The Helix 12 SI G2N Mega is connected with a 9M SILR Y cable and 2 XPTH 9 20 MSI T transducers.
I installed now a helix 12 G2N from another boat and it works perfect.
So its not a problem with the transducers.

Have you tried Restore Defaults  ...??

yes, before and after the update.

Try disconnecting the Y cable and plug the SI xducer directly into the unit  ...

Y cables have been known to go bad  ...

I've got a reply from the last supplier I contacted:
The unit is broken an can not be repaired. It seems the hardware responsible for the signal processing of the unit is damaged.
This theory is supported by the behaviour after the update (which should have optimized the signal processing but worsened it).
This can occur due to e.g. little unhandled power surges.

maybe a solution.
If I connect a smaller unit to the helix 12 it is then possible to see the depth and sidescan on the helix 12.
And could this be possible with a helix 7 or 8 SI g3n ??
It is also strange that a unit of 2.5 years old cannot be repaired.
This makes it an expensive hobby.

All 8” units can share Sonar thru Ethernet  ...
All HELIX 7 G2N and G3N units can share Sonar thru Ethernet (HELIX 7 G2 and G3 cannot)  ...

Can i use the XPTH 9 20 MSI T transducers on the Helix 7 G2N or need i a helix 8 for this.

Yes HELIX 7 - with caveats  ...

HELIX 7 SI G2N cannot transmit 800kHz imaging (only 83kHz/200kHz 2d and 455kHz SI)
HELIX 7 SI G2N cannot transmit 1200kHz MEGA imaging
HELIX 7 SI G2N cannot utilize the dedicated DI piezo in the MSI xducer (DI in 7” is blended DI from the SI piezoes)
——-

Yes HELIX 8 CHIRP MEGA+ SI - with caveats

All Humminbird xducers with “9 20” in the designation are 83kHz/200kHz 2d piezoes so the unit’s Connected Transducer selection has to be changed to a selection that does not have “HW” (CHIRP 2d) in the designation

Thanks rickie,

I think to buy the helix 8 G4N next yaer so i can use both units again.
