two questions of many that i have . when i zoom in it is blurry hard to see. is it the way i have the unit setup or is it the unit, meaning spending $1800 more for the 1198 to get the better picture. no one in my area has the 1198 that i can look at to compare. when i installed my sd card into the unit to update the software on the unit it would not update. is it because the unit is updated. sortware version is 5.840

Your software version loaded can be determined by going to the diag screen in your unit.
5.8 is not the latest. check the downloads here on the forum for the latest.
Make sure when you put in the sd card with the update there is nothing else on the card but the .bin file.

Chuck is right. The latest software for a 798ci HD Si unit is 6.250.
Like Chuck said: make sure that the software update file is the only file on the SD card when you use it. I would remove any waypoints, routes and tracks on the unit (if any as it is new) before updating the software and reset the menus back to the original factory settings using the Restore Defaults menu.
If your unit will still not update the software, try fully formatting the memory card you are using and download a copy of the update software file to it and try again. When you format the memory card; make sure that you are using an SDHC compatible card reader as well as formatting software when you do so – if you are using an SDHC memory card (these are 2GB or larger in capacity).

thanks guys, my problem was i did not realize i had download other things on the sd card. i was able to download the new 6.250 software. for some reason i had to run hummingbird pc serveral times before i was able to download it. i am very pleased with the help i have received and the fast service. it only took two days to receive my order.this is one of the reasons i went with humminbird.

River...great. Sometimes we forget the uits are a computer and now operate like one.
File maintenance for updates is a computer process. Waypoints are a computer process.
These units ar simply small laptops just shaped differently..
I think you are well on the way to becomming a good user.
Now for some pictures of your screens (scans) and the fish you catch. ;D
