Title: 898 having problems reading depth under 10'
Post by: vwiert on May 03, 2014, 11:23:48 AM
I am having an issue with my 898C HD SI reading the bottom when in less than 10' of water with sonar and DI, but side imaging works fine.  I also have a 998 with the same transducer so I tried switching the units around and it doesn't have any affect so I know its not the transducer.  It only starting doing this with the new software so I tried to reloading the software and still no joy.  I have had other issues with this unit while on the last software version such as not booting up properly and locking up but that has all gone away since I updated the software.  Any ideas on what to try before I send this thing in?  [attachimg=1]

If you restored defaults I don't know what to tell you. There is a strange effect with the sharpness setting on anything except off. It looks different on 1198 but try turning it off if it is on. Bob

hi have you checked to see what your depth is set at? maybe put it on auto depth.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums vwiert.
Cross-testing your 898 transducer with your 998 was a good thing to do as we know now that the issue is with the 898 unit and not the transducer, its installation or the power to the unit.

Try setting the Surface Clutter menu to a lower numerical setting (even down to “1”).  If that does not help try setting the Water Type menu to the “Salt (deep)” setting.  If still no joy than you need to call the Humminbird Customer resource folks about getting it fixed.

10' of water is pretty shallow.
I'd set the 2d sensitivity as low as it will go and re-check.
Also, check your transducer offset.
It should always be a positive value of from .5 to maybe 3 feet, depending on how far
your transducer is under the surface of the water with your boat at normal operating weight.

Thank guys for all the input.  I have set the messed with the surface clutter settings, sensitivity, sharpness, and the auto depth settings (auto) already.  I will try to  change to the "salt-deep" setting and see what happens.  Its really strange when it happens.  I will be drifting/trolling along and when I get to around 10-11 feet deep it goes hay wire and reads erratic depths over, usually over a 1000 ft.  I will then move to deeper water and sometimes it resets and reads accurately, while most of the time is needs to be shutdown and restarted.  I will let you guys know how things turn out.  Thanks again.

Make sure and reset the unit to its factory defaults (Restore Defaults menu) before you try the Surface Clutter menu adjustment once again and then try the Water Type menu adjustment.
