Title: NOOB question...s... what unit should a beginner get?
Post by: rnorman3 on November 07, 2012, 07:45:44 PM
Hi everyone, I just bought a new boat (Bayliner 185) and was thinking to put a fish finder/sonar on it.  I live on an island in the Atlantic, Newfoundland very near the ocean.  I've always been interested in exploring the sea bottom, did some diving at depths up to 100ft in the past.

I'd like to get some sort of imaging such that I could see a sunken ship at depths of about 300+ft!  I've heard of towfish etc...for side scanning.  I don't really want to get into thousands of dollars right now.  Is there something in the $500 range that I could get that would show up something like that on the bottom? Maybe a fish finder might be the only way to go on the $500 budget, I'm not sure.  In any case what would you recommend I do?  Any particular unit that I should get?

Thanks!

If you only have $500 to spend then you might be able to get a Down imaging unit. I would wait and try to get a bigger sonar unit that will have Side Imaging also.

Hi Norman

Sometimes used equipment offered in this Forume, just an alternative for low budget.

Good technology costs money.
You might be able to get something for $500, but the screen
will most likely be so small that you won't be happy with it.

Supposedly, Humminbird side-imaging units only work to
depths of 150 feet.

With a conventional sonar, if you got experience with it, you might
be able to tell what a shipwreck looks like, but it would require a lot
of time on the water.

I think your budget is too low, unless you can get a good used 1197c,
which has side-imaging, and a nice big screen.  Then again, buying
something used is always extremely risky.
