998 combo able to connect via ethernet with 899 combo?
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:10:36 PM »
I have a 998 si on the console but want to upgrade my bow fishfinder to a 899 si. would it be possible to link them together? how would I and what would I need? Also, would there be any concerns that I should be aware of between those two units working together? any info would be great. thanks.

Yes you can Ethernet connect these two units gawnfishin.
You will need an AS-EC-QDE Ethernet Adapter cable for the 899 unit and an AS-EC-XXE Ethernet Connection cable to connect them.  The AS-EC-XXE cable comes in a variety of lengths which is shown in the part number (replace the “XX” with the length):
AS-EC-10E is a 10 foot cable
AS-EC-15E is a 15 foot cable
AS-EC-20E is a 20 foot cable

Just make sure that you are running a new enough version of software in both your units for this.  What software versions are you running in each now?

thanks for the reply. But as of now I am only running the 998 on my console and have not bought a unit for the bow. I believe I have the latest software update on the 998 but I will have to double check. But it seems like ill just get me a 898 instead of the 899. I was hoping it would be plug and play.

IF you can find an 898 or one at a decent price!    :o
IT IS plug and play, the only additional thing you need besides the Ethernet cable is the AS EC QDE which costs around $25-$30. So if you contact www.UniversalMania.com (I prefer by phone) or see it listed here:
http://www.universalmania.net/humminbird-as-ec-qde-ethernet-adapter-cable/
Heck even Walmart sells it online - I am running that exact setup and  the $25-30 surely offsets the cost of the 898 if you can find one, I have found they are going for over $1000 if not $1200 many places, maybe you can find one for a lot less.
At that point I would look long and hard @ another 998 which Universal does have some left at a nice price. I really like the technology sharing of Sonar Data between the machines, and having a HS puck makes both track really well.
