Title: zoom in and out speeds
Post by: vkjanzen on June 27, 2014, 07:59:05 AM
I have a 798ciSI unit - has internal GPS.  I recently fished with another who had one of larger screened units and he could zoom in and out and the screen changes were almost instant.  Mine seems to 'load' and takes time.  He had external GPS puck - would this make a difference.  Anyone using external GPS w/this unit - pros/cons?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums vkjanzen.
No.  The difference you are seeing is in the processing power of the larger unit.

Greg - thank you for the quick response.

Are the new 800 series units faster?
Is there any advantage to using EXTERNAL GPS puck?

Thanks.

Yes, the new 800 series units are faster.

The main two advantages of an external GPS Receiver is that it can be mounted closer to the transducer, which minimizes any user controlled error for waypoints, and it can be sent in for service without having to do without your sonar unit.  Another advantage would be that it should be able to work better in a high electrical noise environment versus the internal.
