998c SI just repaired but doesn't see sonar when turned on
« on: January 02, 2015, 09:09:16 AM »
I sent my 998 into HB to have the directional button repaired since the up function was not working right while it was still under warranty.  Received it back and then took it out to the garage to see if it works better, which it does.  Still not as good as the left/right and down function but it could be me.  The problem I have is that when I plugged it in it doesn't see the sonar or the GPS, which was working fine before.  I also have a buddies boat that has the 898 in my garage so I hooked it up to his boat and the same thing happens there so it is not my connections.

Any ideas on what is wrong?  HB is out until the 5th and it is eating at me so I figured I would try here.  It does have the latest software running and the self test says everything is ok.  Thank you in advance.

During power up (after the Loading screen)...press the Menu button once ...

Then choose "Normal" to force the unit into normal operating mode...

Then see if you have any sonar views ...

If there are now sonar views ... Check the temp readout to see if it is registering temp (it will register ambient temp where the xducer is located)...

If there is no temp readout box ... Go into the Main menu system under the Setup tab to the "Select Readouts" setting ...

See if there is even a choice to set one of the readout boxes to temp ...

If the sonar views are available ... But there is no selection for "Temp" in the readout setting ...then the temp probe has most likely failed in the xducer ...

BTW ... The unit tics the temp probe upon startup to see if there is an active xducer attached ... If the unit doesn't see the temp probe upon startup ... The unit will self-start in Demonstration Simulator mode ...
----------
----------
After forcing the unit into Normal operating mode ... If there are sonar views ...and there is also a temp readout ... Then post back with results ...

After forcing the unit into Normal operating mode ... If there are still no sonar views ... Post back with results ...

I did force it into normal mode and there were no readings, on either boat.  However I will see verify the temp readout was selected.  Since this happened for two entirely different boat set-ups I cant believe that both transducers would be bad.  now that you mention the ticking I will listen to both transducers and hear if they are making that sound.  I also have a spare xnt-9-20 transducer that I can hook up to the back of the unit as well.

I misused the term tic ... I meant to say the unit sends a signal to the temp probe to see if it is active to determine if there is a xducer attached ...

Still you may be able to hear the xducer ticcing if the sonar is active ...

I agree it seems odd that the same results are on 2 different boats ... But stranger things have happened ...

Have you tried Restore Defaults ... ??

There's no telling what settings HB changed when they had your unit  ...

I did not try restore defaults...I think I will try that.  Would it make sense to reload the latest version of software as well?  Cant remember if it allows that or just newer versions.  Thank you for the help.

I would suggest trying these few things first ...

It is highly unusual for hardware to fail just in the trip back from HB ...

They have a "bench test" checkoff list before releasing the unit to ship back to the customer ...

Your issue seems most likely to be a setting issue ...especially since you've tried it on 2 boats ...

My first recommendations are to diagnose the possibility that the unit is not recognizing the xducer as attached for some reason ...

Restoring Defaults is to diagnose maybe HB had the settings wacked out ...

Did HB update your software to the newest version while they had your unit ... Or had you already updated to the latest ...??

I am 99% sure I had the latest software on there before sending, since the release was date was in May and I am fairly good about updating.  I will reset the defaults first.

I did restore defaults, no change.  I added a new, never used transducer, no change.  Playing with what shows on the left, the only thing that would actually show was the voltage.  Time would not show, temperature reading was not a choice.  All screens white with some borders, but only voltage showed, but no maps.  Must be an issue internal.
