Title: Ethernet cable and as-ec-qde 700 test
Post by: Running_swift on September 10, 2016, 08:42:25 PM
Networking a 788ci hd to a 898c and no network tab appears and no IP address is register on both units. Upped the version to the newest as of sept 1st 2016 on both units. Deleted and reset everything from factory resets, triplog, waypoints, routes, etc.  still nothing from the networking.

Must be the cable then.  So I tested the Ethernet cord and Both ends have each pin matching 1 for 1 with no shorts between pins. The collar of the Ethernet (the screw end) did not have continuity.

Tested the as-ec-ode for the 700 and found the four outside pins on the hourglass side matches 1 for 1 to a pin on the round connector. Found the middle pin matches the collar on the round end. Attached is a schematic of the pin matching from the ends of the ode 700 cable.

Is this right?  Any help to get these units to talk to each other would be great.

Untill the screw-on collar is securely tightened to the unit or switch you will not see that continuity. It is an important ground source. Bob

Thanks for the reply. When tested the continuity through the threaded connector (shown as 'E') on the Ethernet cable, there was none. Is the collar on the Ethernet plugs to have continuity?

Thanks
Chris

I had a loose ring inside my Terrova head which caused very strange behavior. Rethinking what I said... the ring being loose may have caused a bad pin connection due to that. Next chance I get I will meter that connection out. Bob
I had assumed the ring would have been connected to cable ground but maybe not.

OK Back from the mission. There is end to end continuity from one ring to the ring on other end of the cable. That must be connected through the shield. My cable is female on both ends so I did not try to meter the pins. I doubt there is a connection. Bob

Lifesaver!!!  I can test the network by making a connection using a jumper from one ring connector to the other while connected to the units.  Was afraid to do this before as it could do some damage. Will report my findings tonight!!!

Tested by jumper'ed the thread collars together while connected to the units and no luck - No ip address and no network tab.  Also reset the factory and no luck their either.  Restested all the pins from the qde hourglass end through the length of the ethernet to the end and there is a 1 to 1 pin correlation including the collar when jumper'ed.  one thing is for sure, the eithernet cable must be replaced.  Next step may be to find someone with another HB and ethernet so I can test the units themselves.

I know you loaded both units with current software. I assume you have all your units registered with Humminbird but, check the numbers on your my humminbird account with the numbers in the units to make sure both units show the proper update #s. Bob

Following are the versions as display on system status screen:

898c = 7.670
788ci hd = 7.680

Looks like the right versions and the latest versions.

Too bad. I would think HB would be the place to go at this point.
