1198 CSI , multiple issues
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:32:39 PM »
After fitting a new 1198 CSI we were unhappy with a number of performance issues.

The transducer is transom mounted on a plate aluminum boat.  The software version is 6.180, the problems included-

Shutting down during operation and selection of different settings.

After the unit has shut down it returns the settings the original default.

Poor image quality on both DI and SI screens,  due to what seems like too much sensitivity.  The image was improved but only when sensitivity was reduced to 2-3 and increasing the contrast to 18-20.  This is not a good combination for great image definition and fish finding.

The image seems to be heavily clouded with normal settings of sensitivity 10 and contrast 10.  This is consistent in any color setting, clouded in a way that makes it almost impossible to view structure or fish.

When the SI range is increased to 120 ft the image is over powered by the same cloudiness regardless of the sensitivity and contrast.

The problem continues with the DI screen also.

We tried another 1198 CSI that we own and had excellent images from this head unit plugged into the original transducer and power supply, this was tested at the same location, same day with the same known structure.
We have also powered the unit from its own battery.
We have tried trimming the motor well clear of the transducer.
There is no radio turned on.

After all of our testing and trying we believe we have a fault in the head unit.  We have contacted the supplier and will more than likely return the unit.

Has anyone else had similar problems with the 1198 CSI ? Or have any other checks to try before its returned ?

Kind Regards Ben

Ben79, try the latest update for the 1198 in the update/download section and retest the unit over the same bottom.

let us know the outcome.

Thanks Roddy,

Shouldn't  a unit purchased last week have the latest available software ? Or is there possible glitches that could be corrected even in a new unit ?  Will the unit automatically install the downloaded software even if its the same version  ?

Thanks for your help

Regards  Ben

Ben, You posted that your 1198 latest update is 6.180, that update is known to have problems in it! There is a 32 character update out after 6.180 to fix the problems in in update 6.180.

Check the download section on the forum for this update and try updating your unit as per instructions from Humminbird.

Good luck Roddy

Your unit was probably shipped from the factory with the newest
software on it (at that time).  But,  you don't know how long it sat on
a shelf, or in a warehouse.

I don't think the unit will re-install software that is the exact same
version.

Thanks for the replies,

I downloaded the latest version of software for the 1198 for the HB site,  when the card was inserted the unit displayed that the installed version was current and no update was required.

So I downloaded the updates from the downloads section on this site and followed the procedure to update my 1198, the unit did not recognize  the software and there was no prompts about the inserted card.

I retried the software from HB and got the same message that it was up to date.

Any ideas ?

Thanks , Ben

It won't re-install.  The only way to do this is downgrade to the previous version then back to the newest for it to take (I have done this several times successfully on my 898).  What I have read on this says don't downgrade your unit to a version lower than what it came with.  So with saying that I don't think there is anything you can do other than send it back to HB since yours came with the newest version.

The update files have a .BIN extention.
Make sure there is only one update file on your SD card.

I'll put my vote with ITGEEK on this one.....sounds like the card has more than one update on it.

Make sure your card is completely empty.....maybe even format it....and then copy your update to the card.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Hi , The card was defiantly formatted before every attempt.  I have bought another SD card to try.

I took an update on a new sd card from this site and an update from the HB site on another new card, the unit only recognized the update from the HB site.   The image is still unacceptable anyway so I ll send it back and see what HB says.

I ll post what they find is the cause.

Cheers Ben
