the screen on my 898 seems a bit "dim" more so in the SI screens, the brightness is all the way up too, if i look at it from an angle, the screen almost looks black....is this normal????

Jeff, another thought. Is this on all the screens or just the sonar?

cant get a pic right now, its seems more on the main screen when the unit first powers on, then on the SI screens, the brightness is all the way up

My 898C SI does the same thing. they need to make the SI and DI screens brighter. And mine is brighter when the sensitivity is set up to 20. On Auto Sensitivity the screen is too dark most of the time.
And I am trying all the different screen colors too. They all seem to be too dark.

I will have to say someone was reading my mind. I have mine out for the first real test today and noticed the exact same thing. My screen is kinda on the dark side. I will say though the green screen works best for a better picture. I tried everything myself. I also noticed that the deeper the water...the better the pic. It seems this really is on the Side Image and not the other screens.

One thing that we all might check out is the electrical connections between the battery and the units control head. Make sure that all electrical connections are nice and tight and that you use a 3 amp in-line fuse for the hot wire. That's the red one for those that are not familiar with the color coding on the wires. Black is the ground or negative DC wire.
One question for Humminbird_Greg: Does the length of the wires and the size of the wires make a difference? I guess that no more than 3 amps is allowed to flow though these wires. And the power plugs wires look like 18 gage. They are not very heavy duty wires for sure. So I used 18 gage wire to extend these power connection wires to reach my battery.

Moose, yes the wire size does matter if you extend them very much. With DC current, the total length of the positive and negative wires determines the amount of voltage loss.

Another consideration is, if the wire is a shared supply. That goes for the negative reutrn wire also.
We use 12 guage stranded or 14 guage solid copper.

I can run some heavier wire from the battery to the control heads power connection wires. With the connectors I am using that will be an easy fix. Just need to get around to working on this.
