Helix 5 SI
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:10:16 PM »
Hello,

I recently purchased a Helix 5 SI and I am curious if anyone knows what the "com" port on the unit can be used for?

Thanks

On the larger units ...The com port is used to connect an external GPS antenna ...

I cannot find a "GPS Over ride" setting in the Helix manual ... Which would indicate the Helix cannot use an external GPS antenna ... (Which may indicate no consumer use for the com port)..

I'll have to let Greg confirm when he pops in ...

Thank you for the reply.  I would hope that it had some potential use.  Perhaps Greg will shed some light.  Thanks again!

The COMM port is certainly used for factyory testing but it can also be used for NMEA 0183 Output as well as for an external GPS input using the AS-HHGPS cable (not from a Humminbird external GPS Receiver) and software updates.

Thank you very much, greg.  If not a Humminbird external GPS, what third party external gps might work with the helix in this way?   Any elaboration would be much appreciated.  Again, thank you.

Something like a handheld GPS unit or one that has an NMEA 0183 output.

Hi everyone. I've one question about Helix 5 Si. Is that works with Humminbird XHS 9 HDSI 180 T Transom Mount Transducer? Can it upgrade SI frequency to 800  kHz?
Regards.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums iceperch.

Yes, the HELIX 5 Si GPS unit will work with the XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer.  It will allow for a finer 455kHz Si/Di sonar due to its longer piezo elements within the transducer although may be hard for you to see on the smaller display that it uses.

The HELIX 5 Si GPS units do not have the circuitry to make the 800kHz so, no, you will not get any 800kHz Si/Di sonar just by connecting this transducer to it.
