As of now, I plan to purchase an 898SI Combo. I notice prices are starting to show up across the net at around $1400 to $1500. I also see the larger 998SI (about $1999) is being advertised at J&H Products for $1572. Then I look closer and see that that price is for "Display Only". What's that all about? It would be nice to have the larger screen size with a 998 vs 898, but I have never seen an HB advertised that way.
Another question, I notice some posts on the net that state that the Humminbird "Information Bar" on the left side of the units cannot be turned off.
Very surprising. You would think a small tweak in the software would allow this. Once you know where you are (depth, etc.), it would be nice to turn it off and get more space on the main screen.
Comments welcome.

If you saw something of interest, by the time it got to that information area you have already passed over what you saw. I havent seen it get in the way of SI to where I feel like I missed something.

998C NVB Combo $1899.72 (+$327.38)

Thanks for the info. I did not know that transducers are interchangeable. I now have a Lowrance X135 but doubt that could be used with a SI Unit. As to expanding the screen size by turning off the "Information Bar", I thought the screen scrolled from top to bottom then that option would be helpful with a 7 in screen when the boat is anchored, etc. I am just learning all about Humminbird as I go along, and want to thank all on this board for their great knowledge and help.

I'm not sure about the 998...but on my 1197 the info modules can be turned off at the bottom of the screen.....they just cannot be moved to a different part of the screen.....
