Title: si transducer location.
Post by: beertech on June 01, 2014, 08:09:05 PM
I just bought a 1198.  Im having probleblems with a place to put a transducer..   Problem is my boat goes on a lift when not in use at the cottage and the place where my last transducer was is inline with the bunks.  I read the si transducer lifts up when hitting an objects  could i reach in the water and lift it up by hand when putting on the lift. or is this not meant to be done on a regular basis.  I will include a pic where the last transducer was and you can see bunks in line.

beertech,
No, the transducer is not made to be “lifted-up”    on a regular basis.

Without seeing more pictures of your boat’s hull, I don’t know if there is a better/safer place for its HDSi transducer.  Could you post some more pictures of the back of your boat’s hull?

thanks for the reply.  i have a couple more pics.  would on the other side of the skeg closer to the drainplug be better.

Is the framework showing in the pic the actual lift you are worried about being in the way...??

There looks to be enough room on the existing white mounting board to miss the "bunk" holding the boat up in the pic....

thats the trailer that its on now.  I spaced the trailer bunks the same as the lift.  I was worried it may be too close to skeg to put it where you suggest.  This is the style of lift it goes on.

I'm assuming you mean the lower unit of the big motor when you mention skeg...

There are 2 considerations with the skeg...

1. The motor must not hit the xducer with the motor turned all the way toward the xducer...
2. The xducer must not be mounted in such a place that would create cavitation directly in front of the prop...causing the big motor prop to "spin out"

On your tin boat...can you post a pic of the entire transom of your boat (out of the water)...with some type of indication where the lift framework would be in relation to the hull...??

This may help us visualize what we're dealing with....

A common issue with any boat hull is that there are certain features constructed into hulls that disrupt the flow of water that is passing by the transom...

If there is any feature of the hull...or even an anomoly like a ding in the hull...this can create bubbles that interrupt the sonar ...

Sonar does not work thru air...bubbles included...

Mounting placement is all about having clean bubble free water flowing across the face of the xducer...

If the chine on your hull creates bubbles...this is definitely not the place to mount the xducer...

Still... Try to post a pic of your entire transom from the rear ...and from each side...with the camera at xducer level...

You could mount the transducer on a trolling motor shaft and pivot. Use  johnny Ray fitting to mount the transducer to the shaft. You will get great pictures on the unit especially if you have the transducer lower in the water than say transom/bottom height.  This will help put the transducer in clear water and away from bubbles and more importantly reducing the surface clutter that bounces off the boat bottom. You can raise the transducer at will.
