83khz sensitivity question
« on: April 18, 2011, 02:42:14 PM »
In the the sonar menu, there is a menu setting for 83khz sensitivity.
It's range is from -10 to 10.

Does it only affect the 83khz sensitivity when you have selected the 83khz beam?
or does it affect any beam that uses 83khz (i.e., 200/83 or 83)?

Thanks in advance.

Great Question.  I wish that the Humminbird Manual would tell us more about these units.   I can't figure out what beam is using the 83 kHz frequency.  I think it's for the down imaging but am not for sure.   I know that 455 and 800 are used for SI imaging.

And 200 and perhaps 83 are for the regular 2D sonar images.

The down imaging can be changed fro wide to medium and to narrow I think.  Just not for sure what frequency the Down Imaging actually uses.

The 83 kHz is used only in 2D sonar mode.
Using the 200/83 or the 83 kHz mode.

Keep in mind, that using the 83 kHz only mode, the 200 kHz still ping since it's that beam that provide the depth reading.

DownImaging in SI units are derived from the left and right beam (455 or 800)

Only the newer DI unit have stand-alone signal for DI

I'm still a little confused.
I'm using the 200/83 for the 2d sonar.

The thing that is confusing me is that on the menu on the sonar screen, there is a sensitivity setting.  It does not say 200 or 83.
And there is a separate setting on the sonar menu for 83khz.

Questions:
1) Does the sensitivity setting on the sonar screen menu affect both the 200 and 83?  I'm thinking that it only affects the 200.
2) If I'm correct about the first question, then are there any kind of guidelines to how much sensitivity to give to the 83 based on what you have the 200 set at? Half, One quarter?

Thanks in advance.

The Main sensitivity setting is for both beams.

For settings the 83 kHz sensitivity, just use your sonar in split mode 200/83 screen and
adjust the max sensitivity you can without cluttering the screen to much.

It will depends on the body of water you are trying to scan.

When you say main sensitivity settting, are you talking about the menu setting when I'm on the sonar screen, or on the sonar menu which only shows a sensitivity for the 83?

Thanks.

The one I refer to is when you press only ONE time on the menu button.
The X-Press Menu I think that HB calls it.

This question revisited because I never got a good answer.
I am currently using the 200/83khz setting for my 2-D sonar.

While on the 2D sonar screen, I press menu, and there is a sensitivity setting.
Is that sensitivity setting for both the 200 and 83khz frequencies?

If it is, then why is there a separate 83khz setting under the Main Sonar menu?
Does the 83khz setting under the Main Sonar menu only apply if you select 83khz?

Also, if you only select 83khz, does the sensitivity setting on the 2D screen disappear, since
you already have one under the Main Sonar menu?

This is very confusing.
Greg, help me out please.

BOTH

To change the 83 sensitivity independently depending of what you want to see or clutter

Does the 83khz setting under the Main Sonar menu only apply if you select 83khz?

It applies with the 200/83 and the 83 only

Also, if you only select 83khz, does the sensitivity setting on the 2D screen disappear, since
you already have one under the Main Sonar menu?

No, the two sensitivity settings have cumulative effect

This is very confusing.

Thanks xSilmarilSx
Another question:

If I normally run my 83/200 at full sensitivity on the 2D screen.
Should I set the 83khz sensitivity on the Main Sonar menu to full also (I think it
goes from -10 to 10)?

What are some guidelines to adjust these two settings?

I would just add that the 83kHz Sensitivity menu is to help balance out the 83kHz sonar returns versus the 200kHz sonar returns.  Some folks think that the 83kHz should show more ‘stuff’ since it is covering a wider area while others do not or they think that the 83kHz shows too much clutter.  This menu allows both types to select what they think they should be seeing.
