They are very good for seeing contrast in the highs and lows.  I am not a big fan of the inverse, but gray is very good.  One reason is it is a direct translation from the byte storage in the file.  For example, the unit stores the intensity of the sonar return as a byte from 0-256.  And of course the grayscale is in 256 bit from black to white.

Some color pallets are better for viewing in sunlight, but may not offer the best translation of color to intesity of the return.

Think you have two labels backwards there Reddog: the first image in Inverse and the second is Gray.  Personally I think they were named backwards.

Is that those paddlefish again?  The ones in the second picture sure have a paddlefish shape to them.

Yes, they are labled backwards!  Grayscale on the Humminbird is called Inverse and Inverse is called Grayscale.  The Inverse (according to HB) is what I like!

Greg,

I agree about the labeling.
When I posted them, I was just thinking that"inverse" would show the actual target black, with a white shadow, which would be inverted from the other screens.

I went out and played with my 1197 and you are correct, they are labeled wrong, according to the color pallete.

Things the make you go hmmmmm. what  were  they thinking.
