I use a power adaptor like this http://www.amazon.com/Sunforce-AC-DC-Power-Converter/dp/B000FIY08U/ref=sr_1_45?ie=UTF8&qid=1341363905&sr=8-45&keywords=12v+dc+adaptor   that came with my 12V cooler.  I plug a cirgarett adaptor into it with a built in fuse.

The 898 draws about 800ma (.8 amps)  I would get a supply with at least double that capacity.

There are a lot of options, radio shack had DC adaptors, some people use a computer power supply and tap into the 12V supply out of it.
You could also use a small 12V dry cell and keep it charged.  The big benefit to using a battery is that you will be safe if you get a power glitch when doing a software update ......If you loose power when doing an update you are likely to be sending your unit back for repair.

Search this forum and you will find a lot of posts about this.

A lot of us use a 110v power converter.

The converter that I have been using is from Digi-Key. it is made by CUI, Inc. Model HK-H1-A12, PRI - 100 -240V 50 - 60 Hz 0.8A SEC 12V=0 -2.5A (set at 2.0A).

This is the information on my converter which was recommended to me 4 years ago and I have been using it without any problems.

There are a lot of different converters used with success, you may want to search this site for them, they only thing I know is that amp output is important along with the voltage.

Make sure you use the recommended fuse (3 amps) on the power sides 3.

I also have a spare GPS and transducer that I use to play with the system.  Most of my updates are done in the house and I do go through the mapping programs in the house.

To view my recordings I use HumViewer and look at them on my computer.

Bob brings up a very good observation. AC power is mostly reliable and not often gets interrupted, but should for any reason this happens you could end up having to send your unit back to the factory if the update was not able to complete. Just kind of the way Hb units work with updates and power loss.
Better safe than sorry so a very good point.
(BOB, do you feel like writing a "tip" and put in the Article and Tutorials section..)

Thanks again Bob,

Chuck

BPS and Cabelas have small 12v batteries you could probably use indoors. .something to the size of a lawn mower battery

A lot of small amp batteries are great for updating on the bench. They do not do well for operation but are the right thing for home upgrade.

Thanks gramps.

That is a fine battery for what is being done..

Great discussion.
I found also that using a PWM charger / maintainer on a 12 volt battery while hooked to my 798 ci HD made it give false sonar reports like 1078 depth and side scan rasters. It seems that some chargers will emi rfi  the unit. I will place a LC filter network that will remove the noise components on the 12 volt buss. Noises can also come from spark on a brush from a regulator or any other system that is also hooked on the 12 volt line. Another route is to use a dedicated battery to separate from the boats 12 volt system.
