Topic: upgrade while running inside on alternate power

A few questions about upgrading.

Is is safe to upgrade while running my 999 inside on alternate power?
One of Doug's videos seems to show him doing this.

My 999 will turn on in either simulator or regular mode while on alternate power
However there is no transducer and no GPS fix inside my house in regular mode.

If one can upgrade on alternate power which mode is best?

Also, I've seen 2010 videos on upgrading. They stress resetting the defaults, twice. Before the upgrade and then after.

Newer videos don't seem to make a fuss about resetting the defaults.

Do you still need to reset the defaults befroe upgrading?

As long as you have a STABLE power source, then it doesn't matter where the upgrade is performed.  The only consideration is: if you are inside, using modified wall current, and there is a power outage while you are performing the upgrade, your unit might get bricked.  Then you may have to send it in to Humminbird.

You want your unit in Normal mode before doing any upgrade.

You absolutely need to reset to your default settings before and after an upgrade.  I think the upgrades have a built in reset after they are done, but you should do it anyway.

Actually you can update the software with the unit running in any mode.
However, since it is a best practice to reset the menus back to the factory default before you update the software (see following comments) and since this is really only accomplished in the “Normal” or “forced Simulator mode”, it is best to do so in the Normal mode and then just go ahead and update the software since you are already there.
This all gets muddied by the version of software you have running in your unit and the version of software you are loading so I like to cover all basses and have the unit run in the Normal mode after manually resetting the menus but I also reset the menus afterwards even though the current software is supposed to do the same thing.

It worked great.
I was afraid to try.
I don't want to turn my Bird into a brick!

I've started viewing  my recordings on the 999, rather than on  HumViewer. 
I saw this on another of Doug V.'s videos, You can then  putz with the settings to change your readings  just like in "Simulator" mode.
It really helps you zero in on the best settings for the waters you fish.

You might think about making a copy of the recording on your PC ....so that you can view the recording in Humviewer at the same time you are viewing the recording on the unit...

There are tools in each venue that compliment the other...
