Topic: First Snap Shoot

Hello All...

I have had my 1197 for a few weeks now and the ice is finally gone here in Michigan so I am starting to play.  This was the first "cool" thing I found on my local lake.  I find it interesting that other fishermen always talk about fishing the "rock pile" about 300 yards infront of the boat launch that is  the size of a john boat, but I have never been able to find it with conventional 2D sonar.  So that was the first place I headed and I believe what I found was not a "rock pile" but was really a sunked john boat.  I would love anyones input, comments or suggestion on my image.  If this truely is a john boat I know where another one is in the lake too.

1197 settings
SI sensitivity: Auto ( found it to work best as the lake has many contour changes)
SI contrast: 14
Sharpness: low
And just for refference the speed is on the snap shoot. 

Also for those wondering my "unit"  set-up it is mounted on a Trition 18'6" dual console bass boat with a 150 mercury xr6 with a 8" jack plate and the transducer is mounted right in the center of the boat on the lower portion of the hull.

Very nice image!  I would definitely say its a boat! 

Did you record the run or just the snapshot.  If you recorded it, you can pause the playback and adjust the settings (color, sharpness, sensitivity, etc) to get the best image, then take the snapshot.

Not that its not good already!  It's a good learning tool and can help you in fine tunig your system.

Yes I did record it and just played it back in humviewer and it measures 11.99 feet long.  Sure sounds like a 12 aluminum v-boat "john boat" to me.  I also found it very interesting that as I drove all around it and came at the sunken boat from different directions it created very different views from some that show as much detail as the snap shot to others that look like two bright lines.  I can tell there is gonna be lots of learning to come for a long time.

I think you will find the more you use SI and HumViewer the more you will learn.  There is so much to see on the recordings it is amazing.  I have had my system for almost a year and I still can not get enough of it as well as this forum where everyone helps.

Yes indeed the angle you approach the target will produce different views and shadows.  This is why in SAR we run adjacent angles for the scan and then review in a viewer.  Depending on the angle of approach you could miss the target completely.  For the adjacent angle we try top make it 90 degress but that can be affected by the area of the water.  In narrow waterways sometime it is impossible to get an adjacent angle so we also use the DI screen.  Chuck

Well I think that you need to get a good rope and a grappling hook but only after finding out if its finder’s keepers up there!
