898cSI Dosent power up.
« on: July 01, 2015, 11:12:46 PM »
Hello quick question maybe long answer I thin. My 898cSI has been working great until today. When I go to power it up all the buttons light but it does not beep or power up the unit. The button lights stay on and cannot be turned off unless you disconnect the power. The screen does not power up at all. Used it two days ago and all was fine. Went out today and didn't check it before I left (like I usually do) and got to the launch and bam no locator. The battery is full charge and all connections are good, soldered and heat shrunk done this spring. Anyone ever encounter this? I disconnected the power and let it sit with the same results. Thanks for any help you can provide or similar problems that people have had happen. Thanks

Either you have a low power issue, the backlight has went out ... Or the backlight somehow got turned down to its lowest level ...

Have the battery load tested and check all the connections ...

If there is not a power issue...I think you should call HB ...

I am a mechanic so battery/connections (all soldered) are not a issue and batteries are always checked SG and load tested monthly. I have 12.8 volts at the unit. Like I mentioned the display lights up but screen is not lighting up or beeping like it is turned on. Then I have to disconnect the power to get it to shut down the keypad lights or it wont shut off. I did call them and read my post as to what they replied to me on this. Thanks, Hollywood

Please forgive me ...I can't find in the above anything about what HB advised when you called them ...

Did HB advise there was a unit problem ... Or just a setting somewhere we need to track down ... ??

I did a quick post and it seems to be lost in space for some reason. When I talked to the today they asked the same questions and I told her I was a mechanic for 40+ years son connections are all soldered and heat shrunk, batteries are checked for specific gravity per cell and load tested monthly. I have 12.7 volts at the unit connection and a good ground too. I can just barely see a gray background that disappears when I try to turn it on, when the keypad lights it disappears and wont power down without disconnection the power. HB said I have to send it in to them with a cost of $279.45 to fix all and return shipping. 90 day guarantee on repairs. I'm at the point of should I invest in the new 899cSI Matrix7 for a grand or repair this one. I bought it for $1600.00 in 2010 so I guess its worth the dough but with 1400+ hours on it I scared something else might go on it like a transducer and that's $290.00 alone. Not sure what to do. Looking for any help or advise I can get. Thanks, Hollywood

I totally understand about stuff getting lost in space sometimes ...

There is a possibility that the backlight somehow got turned way down ...

The only way I know to remedy that is to go thru the button presses to get to the backlight menu ...this may prove kinda difficult because we can't see the display to guide us to the menu ...

Let me set down with my 1197 tonight and map out the button presses and I'll get back to you here (it may be Tomorrow before I can get it posted here for you) ...

It's worth a shot trying anyway ...before paying the repair fee ...

I have experimented with the backlight on my 1197 and found that the level of backlight intensity resets itself to max at each power up ...

This makes it unlikely that the backlight setting was turned to minimum before shutting the unit off and then stays at minimum on the next power up ...

You also mentioned that were not hearing any beeps when pressing the buttons ...even tho the buttons are lit up ...

The only other test I can think of would be to power on the unit until the buttons are lit up... and insert a SD Card into the unit with a different version software than is presently on the unit ...or has new waypoints on the SD Card from HBPC and see if the green popup will even come up on the display ...

If you still get nothing at all on the display ...I'm guessing something more serious than just a setting....

Hollywood, I know you are pretty confident that your power is good, but is about the most likely thing that will cause this type problem other than something gone wrong inside the unit.
Testing with everything except power would be a good idea also.

When you see the 12.7 V at the unit power plug, is it plugged in with the unit attempting to power up?  The voltage can be much different under load......There are a couple of pins on the power plug where the power can be tested when connected to the unit.......You will have to dismantle the cable collector ..... just plug in the power with everything else disconnected and see if you can test the voltage at the pins......While the unit is attempting to power up.

I don't know if it will work but here is info that was on the Walleye Central site a while back.  It was posted by Jasen Halfen regarding a 598 ci si unit.  ( Try a hard reset. When starting up, press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds, then release and let the unit power up.)
Let us know if it works.
