I have a 1198CSI mounted in the rear port side of my 14 ft   Smoker Craft tiller.  My transducer is mounted on the starboard side of the transom with the GPS puck mounted .   directly above the transducer.   I am connected to a bow mounted Terrova trolling motor using I link.     It is my understanding that when using  the I link to go to a way point that the Terrova uses the GPS in the trolling motor.   If this is so then when I reach my destination does the 1198 use the trolling motor gps to hold my position and if so  when I mark a waypoint  I assume that I am marking the position of the transducer  mounted on the transom.   This would put me off by the distance of the trolling motor from the transducer.   Do I need to mount my GPS puck on the bow by the trolling motor and do an adjustment to compensate for this distance?

No.

When you mark a target with your 1198 using its stern GPS puck over the 1198 transducer, you are marking the target's location when the stern GPS is over it, i.e. Nxx xx.xxx, Wyy yy.yyy.

On the bow with the Terrova's GPS you navigate to Nxx xx.xxx Wyy yy.yyy and the bow is over the target.

Now if you idle to Nxx xx.xxx Wyy yy.yyy using the 1198 with stern GPS puck, then the stern is over the target.

Also you want the 1198 GPS puck close to the 1198 transducer because targets seen in the 1198 SI are measured from the 1198 transducer and GPS coordinates come from the GPS puck.  Therefore the coordinates will be more accurate.

OK that makes sense.   I was getting confused when I would go over a crib and mark it when I was on top of it and when I would go back it was not on the screen.   I got to the point where I would throw a marker out and when I returned I was not on the marker.  It goes to show that  when your mind gets confused you will never figure out the problem until you step back and start over.

Thanks for setting me straight.   Now the only problem is I hope that I remember this next time out
