Accoring to Humminbird's product website,
for side-imaging with the 798, it looks like you only have
two choices for transom mount SI transducers:
XHS 9 HDSI 180 T or XNT 9 SI 180 T.
The first one is physically longer, so it will probably give
you better images than the compact one, but you can't use the 800khz
capabilities of it.

It is also more expensive.
I'd let Greg Chime in before I made a purchase.

I just installed a new xhs 9 hdsi 180 t on my boat for my 798. It  does give a more crisp and clear picture than the compact transducer that came with the unit. Do a google search and you will find it online about 80 bucks cheaper than Humminbird sells it for. Got mine from amazon for 161.00 $

I would shop around for better pricing on units or accessories! (I’ll probably get in trouble for that statement  :o ).  We sell at MSRP so better pricing is out there.

You are right ITG; the larger more expensive HDSi transducer will give better 455kHz Si images but at added expense.  Some are not able to see the difference on the smaller displays of the 7098 units, though Speedtroller definitely did.
