587ci Update?
« on: March 11, 2012, 02:50:08 PM »
Humminbird is giving me an update for my 587 ci.  I have tried to update but the unit won't pick up the files on start up.  Is there anything I need to do different?

What is the file name they gave you?  The name of the .bin file...

also turn on the unit and restore factory defaults then turn off the unit..
Put the sd card in and turn on the unit.  follow directions...dont forget to restore factory defaults at the end..

Have you looked at the file on on your card from your computer too make sure the file is on it?  How big is the file?

Does your unit recognize your card?

Have you reformatted card, I just erase the files on my card.  Some folks have had problems with their cards after reformatting.  They ended up purchasing a new card and using it as is to fix the problem.

Do you have a second card to reload the bin file on it, just in case there is a problem with the card.

I have the smallest card I could find which is used just for updating my unit and I keep a copy of them in a separate folder.

I very long file name starts with the letter C and has numbers and letters after that.  I can get the name of the file if you all need it.  The card I'm using is a SDHC 8 gig brand new. I was able to back up waypoints to the card. So it's reading it and writing to it. I made sure the file was the only thing on the card.  Any suggestions?

HELP PLEASE??

Greg,
I have a friend who is in his 60's and NOT very tech savvy...
He just bought a brand new Smoker Craft Deep V this week; and they installed 2- FF587ci (320X240 px) units on the boat - I just finished moving ONE of the XDCRs to the trolling motor, as unbelievably the d0rks put both the XDCRs on the transom....
UGH!
He now realizes the dealer wasn't the best choice after the fact, and knows I used to sell & service these things back in the late 70's so I been down the road a bit and asked if I'd help him out... Anyways he's running v4.620 and I see the latest is v5.310 - any chance you could supply me with a link so I could update his machines to the latest & greatest for him??
I think he may even be intimidated about registering his units online- when I tried to talk to him tonight he said some crap about being too late & maybe tomorrow...

I don't know if you recall me or not - but we've exchanged a few emails over the past 5-6 years...
You can contact me at sfw1960_AT_gmail_DOT_com, if you'd be so kind, Sir.

I would surely appreciate anything you can do to help. as always~
Best,
Robert A. Snarski

You should really try and get your friend to register with HB.
He could end up missing an important pieve of information if he doesn't.
Will make it easier for HB Cust Svc to wokr with him in the future.

I got you covered Robert.
YOU DA MAN, YOU DA MAN, YOU DA MAN~ GREG!!!!

I used an old 32MB Sandisk SD card I bought at least 5 years ago just for doing S/W updates for my own & other friends' machines.
:D
I keep threatening to get a card reader - but I used my old RCA Lyra MP3 player as my "mass storage device" and copied the 587ci_v5_310.bin binary file you so graciously provided me a link to on to the card - I think it was 1.8MB....
Fired up my friend's 587ci machines ( one at a time, of course) went to the system menu - reset to factory defaults, powered down the unit(s) and booted up with the card in the slot....
poked a few keys to confirm the prompts I wanted to update the software.

SHAZAAAM!!!!
 >:D
WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!

Jus' Like Chicken Baby!!!!!!!!!!

FWIW - my mostly computer illiterate buddy, Danny Boy did indeed register his machines too, will miracles never cease??

I really must say that for JOI, (Humminbird) and the rest of the world, there is a pot of human gold - and his name is Greg Walters.
The world needs more people like you Sir!
MANY, MANY Thanks again & again!

You ROCK.
Robert A. Snarski.

I didn't receive an email.  But I went on the Humminbird website and redownloaded the file.  The unit picked it up real quick and  I successfully updated my unit.  Thanks guys for all your help.

Gents
I really am in a barrel here...on one hand... I have had Humminbird units for the last 30+ years... so you could say I am a Humminbird fan

 Until now...

Let me give you the WHOLE story so you are aware of all the details

Going to try a new lake out this year... (Jack Lake Apsley Ontario, Canada)... there are quite a few navigational hazards (submerged rocks) on this lake so decided to bite the bullet and spend the $290+ on the Navionics+ card ( ever notice that paying that much for such a tiny little item seems to hurt that much more? lol) My logic was..$300 for a card...$1000 for a bottom end if I hit a rock right? Cards is really the better value

Purchased the card... recommendations are to update your FF/Chartplotter to the latest version of software... My latest unit was purchased in May 2013... it gets used 2 weeks/yr when I go on holidays, except last year was 1 week... so essentially I have the original software on the unit and it has approx 35 full days of use on it

Logged into "my humminbird" where all the info on my unit is... found 2 "recommended" updates... 1 for software and 1 for pc connection.... so... I downloaded the software update to an empty SD card... reset all the settings on the unit to default factory. turned off unit and followed the instructions to install the new update.... new software looked kewl and I thought great.... everything worked perfect

WRONG

Turned off the unit and installed the Navionics+ card..... had my transducer in a barrel of water(don't know where I heard it but someone said transducer should be in barrel of water when running)... decided to browse to chartplotter screen to see the lake we were going to

 "Loading, loading...loading...."
Unit rebooted... literally turned off and restarted... thought...hmmmm... so I tried again
"Loading, loading, loading...." reboot
Crap.... turned off unit.... unplugged from mount... checked voltage at battery... 12v... checked voltage at mount... 12v... so it's not a low voltage issue
Tried it 3 more times and the 4th time it rebooted to a black screen with green lettering
"Matrix Series Version 4.300".... and I couldn't turn the unit off or scroll to any other screen

So I googled the message and found this forum and Greg ... however... it seems Greg has had his duties change and he no longer does this kinda thing

So next step is call, email, live chat, and cuss silently until I got through to Gwen at Humminbird...who btw... was very helpful, however, all we could do is send my unit back to an authorized Humminbird repair centre and have it repaired

So $55 for shipping TO Humminbird repair... $35 flat rate fee to REPAIR my unit...AND another $20 for them to ship it back to me, which I found unusual....
 So to recapp

IF YOU INTEND TO INSTALL THE "RECOMMENDED" UPDATE TO YOUR UNIT BEWARE!

If your unit crashes (as mine did) YOU will be on the hook for ALL shipping charges both to and from the repair depot AS WELL AS the repair cost... mine was the minimum charge... I was forewarned it could have been more if they found more wrong

Honestly, I am not a whiner and complainer, i understand these Companies and their repair centres have policies.... but seriously... 35 days of use on a FF/Chartplotter... install 1 update  THAT WAS RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND DOWNLOADED DIRECTLY FROM THEIR WEBSITE" and now I'm out $110?

Thats my rant... just want all of you to be aware of what MAY happen if you install the update
