Depth reading 3 feet
« on: July 05, 2014, 05:44:04 PM »
This has just started had unit since Jan 2013. My 998 c HD SI has worked perfectly, last couple
Of times though the right hand side of the screen looks like it is reading everything normally, but my
Left hand side upper left where the digital readout is says 3 feet. It will eventually say the correct depth, but it will go back to 3 foot. There has been no software update has original s/w version it
Came with
Any ideas?

Gaspergoo,
Is this happening with the boat drifting and all other electronic devices turned off or does it only happen when the trolling motor or main motor or some other device is running?

Is this only happening in shallow water or at all water depths?

Do you know of anyone else that has a non-DI model Humminbird unit that you could cross-test units with?

What transducer(s) are connected to your 998 unit and where are they mounted?

First off thanks for the help

Yes it happens all the time, doesn't matter if I'm drifting, with or without my tm on, doesn't matter if my 958 is on or not doesn't matter if the big motor is running or not. Now Sunday when I started the unit up it read 3ft about 3 hours, then later it read correctly for about 10 minutes then back to 3ft.
It happens at all depths

I was gonna swop out my 998 with my 958 this weekend to see what that will show

I have a shoot thru in the bottom of the boat for high speed, a splitter, and the SI TD mounted on the transom as far as the actual type I don't know

I would suggest disconnecting the AS SIDB Y cable and plug the bilge xducer directly into the back of the unit...

If the depth issue is fixed - the AS SIDB Y cable is bad...
If the depth issue is not fixed - the bilge xducer is bad...

Rickie is right on with his suggestions Gaspergoo but I would still cross-test your 998 and 958 units.
If the shoot thru transducer looks like it is bad I would first try pouring in some water so that there is enough to cover halfway up the transducer and then test again.  It may be that the transducer is starting to come loose and the water could should this.

Finally got the time to do some testing, as u recall the 998 digital read out was showing 3 ft regardless of the depth, really didn't matter what the boat was doing,(stopped, drifting, trolling, wot, etc) it always showed 3 mph. I put my 958 on the console, and it read accurate for a little while (maybe 30 sec. or so), then it begin
to jump from 95 to 3 to the correct depth to 67 to 38, so it was all over the place, even tried it with a dry bilge and some water in it, same results. Did not see "rnvinc" post or I would have tried that, but I will next time out, any other suggestions

Thanks

No, just to test without the AS-Si-DB-Y cable like Rickie said.
