798ci HD Si depths?!
« on: September 17, 2011, 01:50:42 PM »
I have few question about SI and DI scan depths.
On older 798ci SI, there was a  depth of 150 ft for sideimaging, but on new 798ci HD SI, there is 100 ft depth. Whi is depth decreased when they changed only LCD bachlight and ethernet port on new model ?

Second question is about DI depth. Is it same as SI depth on Humminbird or is it bigger? For example, Lowrance and Simrad stated on their website thath depths are 150ft for SI, and 300ft for DI.

I'm doubting on 798. I need it for spearfishing and vertical jigging.

What are maximum depths users achieved on everyday use with 798?

Tnx for answering.

It did not really decrease; it is just that the marketing folks just thought that specifying the 100 foot depth would be better in case someone was in one of those areas where the unit’s Si sonar could not perform down to 150 feet.  The water conditions affect how far the sonar will work and so the 100 foot depth range was a safer specification to advertise.

The Di sonar on the 798 units comes from the Si sonar and so the depth that it can work to should be the same as the Si sonar.

Thank you wery much for answering Greg.

I understand that part about water conditions and marketing  :).
Point is,  my friend sucessfuly scaned down to nearly 50 meters (~160ft) with older 798 and good conditions, and I was worried that I will not scan near that depths with my new 798 wich I'm planing to buy. Tnx for clarifiing  ;)

50 meters?  That’s a good deep scan.  The deepest I have seen an Si scan to was 182 feet (~55 meters) which was done by a Customer.  Engineering won’t tell what the deepest they have scanned to is (and I’m pretty sure that they tested the max depth on this).
