1198 splitter cable and use
« on: August 03, 2012, 08:21:10 PM »
Hi Guys I'm new on here and it looks like a great site with plenty of info.
I've just imported a new Key West 196 BR to Australia and fitted a 1198 c si combo to it to use in my guiding business,I've previously had Lowrance for approx the last 20 years but got sick of being let down but that's another story.

Any way I've fitted the unit and it works on side and down scan but I havent fixed the  2d shoot through hull transducer to the hull with epoxy yet and I'm trying to get the best location that suits it and will do so then.

My question is though even when I find a good location for it and it starts working and I switch back to si the si doesn't work until I take the 2d transducer off the bottom of the boat again then the si kicks back in.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also can any one suggest the best general setting for this unit I mostly use it from about 3 ft to 100 ft of water.

Great looking sounder I just need to learn how to use it.

Paul D Welcome ! First the bad news, the Key West hull is a "samwitch" type (sonar beam will not pass thru the glass-foam-glass hull).

Now the Good news ! On some of there hulls there is a spot just for a in hull transducer to be installed. Look in the aft hatch for a "thin spot" that is depressed.

With the boat in the water: 1. Put about three" (3) of water in the depresson and weight down the transducer and try move it around to get  a signal.

Now to the switching between transducers, check out the 1198 Product Manual, page 134,Transducer Select.

STEPS: ADVANCED MODE>SONAR>TRANSDUCER SELECT> Use the LEFT/RIGHT select key to pick a transducer to use. This step will have to be done each time you need to switch between transducers.

This works for me!

Do the fish swim up side down DOWNUNDER ?

Gooday Mate and Enjoy!

Hi Roddy, thanks for the reply mate it's much appreciated,I can get a reading from the 2d transducer in the bilge area like you suggested so I guess I've found the right spot,I'll give it another go tomorrow while I'm out on the water,I'll have a mate with me tomorrow so he can drive while I move it around a bit more to see what happens, and I'll do the transducer select and see what happens, thanks again mate I'll let you know how it goes.

Ha Ha yeh mate they do  ;)  ;D

I've attached a pic of one of the fish a client got the other day while I was using the side imaging for the first time, he was very surprised when I said cast over there and then he hooked this Golden Trevally they are great fish to catch and even better sight casting fly's to them in summer when they tail on the flats.

Nice fish!

Try putting a sand bag on over the deuced to weight it down as a test so it can be better  evaluated.  >:D 8)

Hi Roddy I think I've got the right spot for it,tested it today but had problems with the side imaging when I set the 2d up,I spoke to the Humminbird rep and he is sending me another shoot through transducer because he seems to think there's a proble with the original one as it shouldn't take out the side image when it's activated.

Will let you know how it pans out.

Got another on fly today as well as 3 others on plastics and blades.

Here's the fly caught Golden Trevally

Paul,
Are using the AS-Si-DB-Y transducer splitter cable or the TS3 Transducer Switch to connect the HDSi and inside-the-hull DualBeam transducers to your 1198c Si unit?

I have never heard of either combination taking out the Si sonar when the inside-the-hull transducer was in use.

Does the 2D and Si sonar work correctly (at low speeds of course) when you have just the HDSi transducer connected?

Hi Roddy yes mate I'm using the  AS-Si-DB-Y transducer splitter cable, the tech guys had never heard of on taking the other out either and said it may be the sheild in the 2d cable that is at fault so I'm getting a new one to try and then work it from there.
If I run the si it works fine but as soon as I put the 2d in place and switch to it and have it working and go back to the si saved screen the si stops working and the screen is all one colour, then I take the 2d of the bottom of the boat and it starts working again.

I'll try the new cable and see what happens,I never seem to have much luck with electronics

Paul, Try putting the transducer overboard in the water and see if the screen does the same thing.

Paul,
If you are using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable than you don’t have to “switch” anything.  There are no menu changes you have to make and there is nothing to switch on the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.  If you are changing the Transducer Select menu setting to the DualBeam setting than you will not have any Si sonar.  Make sure that you are not changing the Transducer Select menu setting when you are testing this.

I doubt that the 2D DualBeam transducer shielding is causing this.  Even if it is unshielded the HDSi transducer has its own shielding as does the AS-Si-DB-Y cable and so the Si sonar should be shielded regardless of what the 2D transducer has.

A very curious problem though…

Hi Roddy yes mate I'm not switching anything over and the Humminbird rep said the same thing
A very curious problem though…

I was on the ph to him as I was testing it and he said he'd never heard of this problem and said try the new cable and we'll go from there.

I'm away for a few days now so wont know until next week when I get a chance to test it again
Thanks for your input
