Title: 597 HD and MK interference
Post by: Lsobo21 on April 14, 2013, 10:19:03 PM
I have reviewed previous posts and can't seem to find the best way to approach my issue, so any input is appreciated:

I have a new 2012 lund impact...on the console is a 898 SI (non HD) running off the transom.
On the bow is a 597 HD running off the us2 on the MK terrova 80# with ilink.  Supposedly lund provides 12 v wiring to the bow as std, which I assume is coming form the main battery. (I have a request into Lund to verify that.)

These were all dealer installed about 8 weeks ago when I picked up the boat.  Yesterday I finally got it out on the water and there is definitely interference when the motor runs.  I have attached a photo for reference.

It seems like from all the posts, there is not one answer...however since this is a new boat, all new electronics...where should you start to fix this?

You have already taken the first step in finding out how the 597ci HD unit is powered (cranking battery or otherwise).

The next step would be to contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks.  1-800-633-1468
Since there is no one ‘best’ solution, you may have to try several before finding the one that works for your boat.

I just did that and the lady didn't ask many questions, but said she was going to send me a ferrite ring???  I think it is a noise reduction device.  We will try that.

It is.  Basically it’s a magnet in the shape of a large ring.  It should come with installation instructions.

you can get that interference out.thats not bad at all .ive seen alot of pictures from people with lowrance hds units that have more interference than that in them but i guess that they dont care .but anyways ive got the 597hd/di unit  at the bow of my boat that had rf noise but i pretty well have gotten rid of the noise.theres different things that seem to help some people, for me the biggest help was to ground the trolling motor but  with  your setup  you might have to do something else. im running a motorguide trolling motor i dont see any noise on the 2d anymore and just a little on the 800/di,but not to bad. dont give up on it you can stop it with a little dinkering around.(o by the way, i love the 597hd/di unit that ive got)

That's pretty clear...I will play around quite a bit, just a little irritating to have to mess around on a new boat with all the gadgets trying to tweak.....and because you can't tweak these without water that makes it so much more "fun".  I'll stop whining now.

How did you ground the motor?

on the motorguide trolling motor, theres a corrosion dewy screwed onto the skeg.i ran the negative wire from unit to that.i dont believe that your minkota has this corrosion dewy

The ferrite ring seemed to work, however I seem to be now getting this double bottom showing up on the screen.  It seems to jump around and go back to normal for a few seconds and then does the double bottom.  Sometimes the depth reading doubles too.

It does this with the console unit (898) off and on....with or without the MK running.

I'm running dual beam in clear mode...any thoughts on what the cause is?

I have added a few new screen shots from the unit to see if this helps someone describe to me how to read...or if there is an issue.

Looks like you were over a pretty solid bottom there Lsobo21.
Try turning the Surface Clutter menu up to a higher setting (with the 898 turned off) and see if it helps the unit to read the right bottom reading or not.  If that does not help enough, try setting the Water Type menu to the “Salt (deep)” setting.

Thank you I will try them both...I did try sensitivity down to one and surface clutter up...didn't change water type.

Also noticed that a software update is now available, I will try that too...however I can't imagine that's the issue since the last update was fairly old.
